R32 HD upgrade trouble, cant boot from cd (long)

#1 Post by clay10 » Sat Sep 17, 2005 2:52 pm

Hi, im new to this forum but it seems like the right place to be.
I am also relatively new to notebook computers in general, in that this is my first one.

So anyway, my 40G drive died on me the other day, just starting clunking and after the DFT determined a physical malufunction and i can hear something actually loose in the drive im pretty sure its gone. So i purchased a new 80G toshiba off pricewatch, popped it in, but it wont boot from CD. So i cant install windows xp. the drive is a DVD drive, but the light for the drive doesnt come on nor will it eject. So i thought the drive might be faulty. However when i pop the old damaged hard disk back in the dvd drive works fine, and will even boot to my xp cd.

i have no idea what to do, it seems there are drivers for the dvd drive that need to be loaded? I dont know, i bought a 2.5 enclosure hoping to install those drivers to this new drive. I dont even know if thats the right idea. But thats where i am at. Hopefully someone point me in the right direction.

thanks
I love my tinkpad.

Welp, i figured it out. I guess the fresh hd needed to be formatted first, and since it wasnt, i guess the thinkpad just shut off the slave as well. Nevermind. im so happy.
I love my tinkpad.

I noticed your thread, I think I am having the same problem.
What did you use to format your new drive? I am trying an 80gb hitachi drive in my R32 and I am getting the same nonsense you reported. I expect I need a bootable NTFS or FAT paritition at the beginning of the drive?

thank you
Lee
