Thinkpad R50e 1834-AU1 Powerless

#1 Post by zaimor » Sat Sep 17, 2005 6:22 pm

Greetings - I'm the local computer geek in the barracks. As most of you are aware the Army uses Thinkpad laptops in thier eArmyU program, so I play with alot of them. This morning a friend brought thiers by (model in subject) saying it wouldnt turn on. I tried the simple troubleshooting stuff... different outlet, different power source, different battery. No go.

I took the keyboard off to check for any obvious damage from spills or power surges (burnt chips, shorts, broken connections) but it seems to the naked eye to be in tip top shape. I tried getting a response from it by removing the HDD and CD-Rom and plugging it in, still with nothing. While it's plugged in, I can hear a slight high-pitched hum coming from the machine, so power is getting into the system and then not going anywhere.

It sounds like the board or a component of it is shot, but I'm much better with software than hardware. Is there anything else someone could suggest I test before I give in and tell her to send it in? Thanks for the help.
