Which was the last non-outsourced Thinkpad?

#1 Post by Michael1980 » Mon Sep 19, 2005 3:54 pm

Now, this has nothing to do with Lenovo.
Remember back in the day, you could lift your TP and see phrases like "Made by IBM" (Mexico, Scotland?) or "Made for IBM" (outsourced)?

So, which was the last TP to roll out of the Mexico factory before they all moved to China? Something tells me it was the T40, but could be wrong. The quality then was sensational, just like the T23/T30.

There have been select models of ThinkPad's being outsourced since the 1990's if memory serves me correct. I think the outsourceing started with the 365 series but I'm not 100% sure on that. As for the last one not to be outsourced, I'm really not sure.

FWIW, my TP365x says "Manufactured by IBM. Made in Mexico" If I'm reading it correctly, the manufacturing date is Sept 1996.

OK, fair enough. The low-end was always outsourced probably.
But what was the last high-end model to be made BY IBM?

The PS/2? Or maybe the Selectric? :P

Yeah, I know, they're not ThinkPads (but they are IBM's!).
Sorry, I don't know the answer you're looking for.

EDIT: The last high end model? How about Blue Gene developed and made in Rochester N.Y.? 8)

Maybe the 3xx wasn't outsourced, or not all of them, because I finally thought to turn my 380 over to see "Made by IBM" and the "Made in Mexico" logo. Still, I've read several articles and what not that mention the 365 and 380 being outsourced. Maybe it was a little of both for the 3xx. Is there anyone that can clarify for sure if the 3xx was outsourced or not?

As for high end models, not sure. I know the 760ED I have was once a high end model and when I turned it over, it said "Made by IBM" and "Made in The USA" on it. I think the last high end model to be non-outsourced was a T series.
