T43p 2668Q2U Evaluation for Heating & Fan Noise
T43p 2668Q2U Evaluation for Heating & Fan Noise
Here it is what I've find out about it ..
1. Over all Heating is less then other T43P I've used.
2. Northbridge is NOT very HOT, how ever southbridge is still hot, but not as hot as previous Ones.
3. FAN is noisy, NO matter what anybody else said here but I feel fan is noisy then my old T43P 2687 EJU.
- In 2687 EJU I couldn't hear Fan at office where noise level is medium. I could only hear it when working at home in after noon and it's very quiet.
-In 2668 Q2U I can hear it when working at office.
4. Initially fan is quieter in 2668 Q2U ... (runs fast while laptop is powered on then in next few seconds goes down and you won't feel it) ... it keeps running on a slow speed then goes up after 7 - 10 mins depends what you are doing.
5. Screen is not as bright as 2687 EJU .. but it's OK
6. keyboard is new and keys are hard... some people might like it some don't ... but keys are noisy. buy keyboard feels sturdy.
7. Intel Wireless card is good .. but when wireless light blink ... it gives feeling that wireless card malfunctioned. if you have used IBM wireless card, light is almost constantly on with minor blinking never goes off completly ... but in this model it goes off completly and comes back up.
8. Shell is sturdy ... like older thinkpads.
9. DVD R/W makes noises, whne powered on makes chrrrrr noises.
10. HDD is better than 60 GB 72K .. it's quiet and fast too.
so bottom line is heating is less but fan is louder than older T43p models.
if you want me to run some specific tests let me know.
Thanks

yes talk about being Aug models quieter are myth.
But this doesn't much hot ... it remains colder than other T43p machines.
what I think they did is " installed a new powerful fan that keeps laptop cooler but it bit more noisy when system is on for several hours."
My laptop is on since last 6 hours and I can still keep it on my lap it's not that hot in center. but now fan is constantly on at medium speed.

After doing some more experiments, I was able to make it little less noisy somewhere close to previous models.
Changed CPU to Adpative from maximum performance, in power manager. I personally don't want to undervolt using CHC.
By doing this FAN Kicked in for couple of seconds and then went lower. for about 45 mins ... CPU temperature is between 45 C to 46 C and HDD TEMP is 36C.
I don't see temperature going down from 45C ...
But fan is bit quiter now. but some T41 and T42 owners might feel lit loud.

More info
Last night fan was very quite .... I would say in allowable range. CPU never goes above 50C .. usually stay between 45 to 48.
Now I'm trying to undervolt CPU and let's see how it comes. right now running stability test with 6X on 0.908v and CPU is at 100% since last 60 mins and temp has not crossed 50C and fan is at low to medium speed. not loud as yesterday.

Keku, what surface is your laptop on AND what is the room temperature (when your laptop is 45C)?
My Q2U hovers between 41-45C, depending on the surface it is on. If it is on my lap for instance, it will remain at 44-45C. If it is on carpet, it will remain around 41-42C. This being in a room temp of ~22C.

Mostly it's on wood table (office desk). ...... at home I use it on dinning table where it is wood on top of that a cloth and a plastic protector....
again everywhere it's same ... I gues in office room temperature is about 65 -70F and at home it's same.
I do agree room temperature makes big impact Laptop temperature.

Another update :
System is at 44C and HDD is at 36C which is considered a not hot temp. fan is running and I can hear wind blowing noise. right now I'll consider it a very noisy.
I don't know why it's too fast and loud .... Laptop is not HOT at all .. Northbridge and southbridge and wireless card are just almost cold (little warm).

2668H2U Vs. 2668Q2U
I have had 2 H2Us and they had to be returned since 1 had a loose battery on one and the other was getting toooo hot on the right sided Palm rest. I heard from Tech at IBM that they have come with new Q series and I am wondering to try that.
Any thoughts on which one to choose and is it worth the increase in price.

I've had this laptop for more than a month now, the only complaint i have is dimmer lcd screen. dimmer than cto model. also 3d score benchmarking is horrible because never once i got 3dmark 2001 score that is higher than 4000. when i said horrible i mean horrible. other than that it runs quiet and cool. it's quieter and cooler than my other cto model, i can vouch to that. but the 3d score is a lot lower than the cto model.

Re: 2668H2U Vs. 2668Q2U
I let you know as my Q2U will ariive within a few days and I also owned a H2U. Never had any too hot areas of excessive fan noise on the H2U so I expect none on the Q2U. The 100gb hard drive will be nice as I use for digital photography and these days images can suck up hard drive space fast.chotta wrote:I have had 2 H2Us and they had to be returned since 1 had a loose battery on one and the other was getting toooo hot on the right sided Palm rest. On Screen Display was not working on this System and I had to reinstall this system again. (IBM sent me a new build 7 disc) during this restore process it was hot ... very very hot. beyond my imagination. and I thought it's gonna stay same every time.
After restore it's on since today morning and it's not even very warm, just little warm. surprisingly south bridge is less hot then it was before. but fan is still noisy.
