#1 Post by GomJabbar » Tue Sep 20, 2005 11:46 am

Says here that Lenovo, HP and Dell are going to preinstall Verizon's EV-DO wireless in some of their laptops. Lenovo will be first with their Z-series ThinkPads! 8)

i am not at all surprised..
it was an obvious next step..

what is a bit less obvious is when we will all be able to wear our computers behind our ear and communicate with anyone or any library with a thought..
my guess is 20 years.. :)

Just so long as we don't become assimilated and become part of 'The Collective'.

You mean we aren't already?

I have used a Verizon PC card or wired connection to a a Verizon cell phone for many years now. My best story is driving across Conneticut from NYC to Hyannis, MA, kids and wife in the back of the car, me and my laptop in the front, following Lance Armstrong demolish his competition in the Tour de France on a live feed on cyclingnews.com. That was several years ago. Now I can get Verizon's Broadband connection most of the way to the Cape, but I look forward to the same connection at our house in Wauwinet, Nantucket.

this begins to enter a philosophical area..
jokes aside about the borg or M$ (are these two terms synonymous?) instant communications and data retrieval for all would be great..
the easier the better..
HOWEVER, instant control (report to the sports stadium, now!, for assimilation) is not a thing anyone, other than those in control, would want..

most people seem to pretty mindless and focused on the trivia of life rather than the big picture and are easily controled by even the current media..

where it is all going i do not know and maybe the future will be grim..

or, maybe, the future can be bright when the real facts are easily learned and "spin" on news no longer works..

 <sigh> :?

Bill Morrow's post is certainly cause for reflection, and very much related to my own professional interests. There are experimental systems now that will use human brain electrical activity generated by thinking in, say, paraplegics, to control simple objects and events on a computer screen. It's quite conceivable that human thought can similarly be instrumental in controlling a device that would pick up information from a distant source. Not at all far-fetched, I should say. Those are the good parts -- now for the bad: It does open up the possibility for mind control, although that would not be as easy to achieve as the dystopians among us might predict. Personally, I suspect that the greater the decentralization and spread of such technology, the more likely it is that such control would remain difficult for any single group of people to achieve.

Meanwhile, I will just enjoy my T40...

you are already scared of instant connection and the bioconnectivity and implementation of technologies?

how about a battery that builds and recharges itself:

http://www.sciencentral.com/articles/vi ... =218392647

other than that, where do we draw the line? where and when do we step back and say "hey, stop trying to control our lives". or did we miss that oppertunity.................... (ive been drinking green tea and it gives me a natural high, i get "out there")

now on the tech side, cool stuff, will that cell phone thing be adding a broadband connectivity wirelessly (over long ranges)?

ok..

wishes using current, projected or imagined technology..?

we all know nano technology and bio-tech is coming and that physical laws MIGHT soon limit current electronics to 1 angstrom wide internal connections in cpu's..

so what IS the future and what do those who can imagine outside the box suppose is coming.. ?

Bill, I thought the 1 Angstrom limit applied to electronic machines, but perhaps not to optical machines. Isn't that the way we were supposed to go ( light ( photon)-based computing ) ? Or is my information incorrect?

On another note, biological computing, where living material functions as gates and switches in "machines" is something that people have been working on for some time now, with limited success. What's even more splendid is that we can now actually grow neurons in living animals -- enormous prospects for repair in damaged nervous systems. I think there is an exciting side to all of this.
