Audio Skipping on T43

#1 Post by tngdiablo » Tue Sep 20, 2005 6:30 pm

After my recent install of iTunes 5.0, I have been experiencing a lot of headaches regarding my audio playback and system performance in general. At first, I thought that the problem was isolated to iTunes but it affects other programs as well. I have MaxMem from AnalogX and every so often it periodically clears out unused memory, in the process boosting CPU usage to 100%. The thing is, prior to my iTunes install (at least I think that is the culprit) it would not affect anything. However, after the install my system has been constantly bogged. Audio playback is sluggish as is video playback. It is also particularly annoying that the system sees random bouts of 100% CPU usage out of nowhere. I constantly check the processes list and see that the only thing using up all those cycles is the System Idle Process, and that's normal. Everything slows down, mouse movement as well. It's jumpy.

I've already tried reinstalling iTunes, the right way, with the new updated version as well. I reinstalled QuickTime. Problem still occurs. I tried reinstalling my audio drivers to see if that was the problem, fresh install and everything. No dice. I uninstalled any programs that I had recently installed and still nothing. Any possible solutions other than a reformat, or anyone ever have a similar problem?

I have read lots of complaints about iTunes 5 on various message boards, etc. I also have my own querks with it as my roommates computer started to develop problems a few days after installation. I can only describe the problem as, when trying to scroll or play a song, it took the program up to ten seconds to respond to the command. I didn't have a chance to check the CPU usage on his unit while all this was occuring, but I would imagine it was similar to your situation.

Luckily, I had an old version of iTunes (4.7.1.30) on a recovery DVD I made ages ago. I uninstalled 5.0 and quicktime from his machine, ran registry mechanic, then installed 4.7 back onto his machine. I wish I could say that was the end of the problem, but it continues. A few days later he began experiencing the same problems with 4.7. Now, this may be completely related to his machine, but as I said earlier, I have read numerous complaints about 5.0, and in most cases reverting to an earlier version isn't possible.

I, myself had 5.0 for one day on my main Uniwill machine. After a little use I deemed it 'bloated' and tried foobar2000. The only drawback with this route is nothing but iTunes supports the iPod, of course. I can handle that, though, as my Shuffle has gotten very little use over the past few months. Sorry for the elongated version of this, but I hope it is of use to anyone who reads it.
