X31- Trying to create Recovery discs - no success

#1 Post by Deckard » Wed Sep 21, 2005 8:40 am

Hi everyone,

new to the forum, great information here :)

I am trying to create Rescue discs to no avail. However, I've managed to burn a Rescue media on a CD-R.

After searching the forum archives, I found the command prompt to run the program that actually should create Rescue discs:

C:\IBMTOOLS\utils\spi\reccd.exe

When I start it, an applet opens and it say "Click OK to create a set of Product Recovery discs now."

But when I click on OK, I get a message saying "the files required for the rescue media could not be found" (Same message that the member jx3000 encountered in this thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=1663)

OK, what are my options now? Is there a workaround to solve this problem that I perhaps missed in the archives?

Thanks in advance[/url]

Rescue Disks

There's a $40 workaround...

I purchased an X31 on Ebay and wanted to restore it to its original software load. I was unable to create rescue disks. The machine was under warranty. I called IBM, told the tech that the hidden partition must be defective and requested a set of recovery disks. He wouldn't OK a free set and suggested I buy them for about $40. I declined.

I called back the next day and spoke with a different tech. I didn't mention the first call. He sent a free set under warranty.

And for those always grumbling about offshore tech support, the tech that came through for me was in India...

Thanks for the reply.

I've contacted IBM Germany. The set costs (converted into $) ca. $60 incl. sales tax.

I bought the laptop from the USA, so I told them that I needed the US version of the CDs. They said it's not a problem, they come from the UK anyway. (The caller ID of the service hotline was also from the UK, I think IBM has their service center somewhere in the UK)

Anyway, to make the story short. I kindly thanked him for the info and hung up.

Then I burned my own WinXP Pro install CD, as it's been suggested on the T-Series sticky thread. The CD preparation and slipstream went perfect (per instructions)

But I don't know if it would install fine. My X31 is running fine at the moment, the whole action was a precaution, you never know.

Cheers

Recovery Disks

After I had my X31 set the way I wanted it I imaged the drive to a spare 2.5" HD in a USB2 enclosure. When I travel I usually take it with me so if I have a problem I can use it to recover.
I also have an X20 with a small software load. I set up a second partition on the same drive and imaged it to a the second partition.
