A31P Warranty at its end

#1 Post by Skwit » Wed Sep 21, 2005 5:16 pm

Hi,

the three year warranty of my A31P wears out in approx. 2 months, I have some flaws on my notebook:

- CMOS battery is dead, when I remove the accu, the complete CMOS settings are lost
- I have a 2cm long crack in the hull, approx. 2cm over the left hinge, the place where the lid gets bent when you open the laptop. Not very deep, but it can only get worse.
- a light black-ish gleam in the lower left and right corners of the display. not very disturbing, but noticable. 1cm high and 0.5cm width.

Can someone tell me if it's worth to send in the notebook? Esp. with the display- and hull-problems, will IBM fix them? The CMOS battery should be no problem, but if they send me one, I could fix this myself.

Thanks,
Christian

1. yes
2. likely will say it's user damage
3. yes, with caveat. I just sent my A31 in for repairs (over a month ago). They replaced it with another defective display. Apparantly they are backordered on good ones. It's been a giant mess. They are working to resolve my problem still (though nearing completion). Most I know of don't have problems... but I did. So it's a chance you take.

funny I have the exact same crack over my left hinge. you probably want to extend the warranty if you can--note the thread in this forum about a31p system board problems (locking up during use). my machine was new old stock, ibm recertified, manufactured 2002, purchased 2004. it died in the first few weeks--new system board. now after a year it freezes--another system board. there are three of us in the thread with this problem.

a31p is beginning to look more and more like a piece of junk...

I read the thread about locking up. I had a similar problem, although my A31 just shut off after one hour of extreme gaming. I could relocate this as a heat problem, opened the laptop, cleaned the heatsink and the fan with compressed air, no crash since. But your problem sounds more difficult and less reproducible.

I never had that problem with my A31 (not A31p). Only lockups were a result of HD corruption due to a systemboard problem, and bad RAM.
