Which programs can I remove from startup?
So I was messing around with my T42 disabling unnecessary windows services, removing some programs from startup, etc. to improve speed. What programs that come preloaded on the T42 can I remove from the startup? (Note: I need wireless and wired networking)
I don't need dialup, so I removed "digital line detect". I also removed "IBM message center", as it was really starting to annoy me. Is there a good use for this?
BTW, I didn't actually remove anything - I just unchecked these programs from the windows startup list (win.ini or something like that - I don't exactly remember). Thanks for the advice.
[ALSO - if you haven't removed unnecessary windows services from your computer, you are really missing out. It really improves the performance and security of your machine.]

The only IBM-specific ones I have run are:
ATIModeChange Ati2mdxx.exe
ATIPTA atiptaxx.exe
BMMGAG pwrmonit.dll
BMMLREF bmmlref.exe
BMMMONDWND batinfoex.dll
TPHOTKEY tphkmgr.exe
SynTPLpr syntplpr.exe
SynTPEnh syntpenh.exe
I have nothing in Startup.
Using msconfig is easy to check/uncheck what you want/don't want to load.

The included Norton stuff can suck up resources. I ditched that as soon as I could and installed Norton Antivirus Corporate. It doesn't have a fancy interface but it sure as heck loads up faster!
The Message Center is useless. I uninstalled that completely.

Depends which programs are loading. If it's Quicktime, Realplayer, AIM, etc, you have to go into the preferences and uncheck the "run on startup" option.

Murder by service, 1-2-3
A column I follow at InfoWorld had a recent ist of WinXP services you can disable. I haven't tried this yet (on 'to do list'), perhaps you can report back if anything stands out.

I actually used this guide for the preferences:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm
I uninstalled the message center, and the IBM installer. But the services thing helped more than anything.

NO, I mean that I have removed everything from the start up folder under programs. I have removed some items in the startup in msconfig but if you remove too much you are in big trouble.Leon wrote:You mean, if you run msconfig, and click the startup tab, NOTHING is checked??
