Using PC2-4200 1GB 533MHz DDR2 in a T42/T42p?

#1 Post by onix » Thu Sep 22, 2005 12:37 pm

Has anyone tried using the faster DRAM designed for T43's in T42's? The form factor seems to be the same, but will the chip set of a T42 accept the faster RAM.

The net shows that it is cheaper to buy the faster RAM than it is the slower PC2700 for the T42's.

Your T42p I believe uses the i855 chipset designed for DDR ram PC 2700/2100 or 333/266 mhz.

Several reasons. . .

1. Your chipset will not suppport it, (you need a 915m with dual channel)
not including the fact that Thinkpads are notoriously fussy about memory.

2. And as mentioned the pin layout on the modules is not the same either.

However if you find DDR SODIMM modules such as PC3200 wich runs at 400mhz it might work. You won't see any speed benefit, but it looks as if that's not the reasoon you want faster ram.

you can use it but the ram will run @ 400mhz ONLY.
