Important -Can BIOS supervisor password accept ";"

#1 Post by nezam » Thu Sep 22, 2005 8:22 pm

Hi,
Apparently, I had mistyped my supervisor password while setting it. But, by trying it repeatedly, I could log once but don't know what was that password. After that, hundreds of trials have not reproduced correct password :( .
When I go into BIOS (in read-only user mode), I can see that "using passphrase" is disabled. That means, my supervisor password can be atmost 7 characters long, and all alphanumeric. But the question is, can BIOS supervisor password still take ";" and "spacebar" ??
I am saying this becasue:
While I restart my TP, it takes me to power-on password prompt. When I try to enter any non-alphanumeric character (like ~!@#$%^&*()_+-={}|[]\':"<>?,./) it does not take it, and makes an error sound. But it takes ";" and "spacebar", and adds one more asterisk when these keys are hit. This is true for power-on password prompt, but I cannot check (since i am locked out of my bios) if the same is true while SETTING supervisor password.
This is important for me to know, because my password contains "n" and "l" alphabets, and there are chances of mis-typing "spacebar" and ";" respectively by mistake. Can somebody who is confident that he will not mess-up with his BIOS check whether supervisor password can actually take these characters. That will allow me to narrow down on my password very much. Thanks..and please somebody who can help...do help.

Just in case: my BIOS is 3.14 and embedded controller 3.04

yes there seems to be a problem with special characters, even when you enable passphrase from outside windows, just only in the bios. I saw this happen with a freind who could not enter , even though he has written his passphrase on a piece of paper and stored it.
