ThinkVantage System Update vs. Software Installer
Not too long ago, the Software Installer replaced the IBM Update Connector (which mostly didn't work anyway) as the means to check for, and automatically retrieve and install, updates to ThinkPad drivers and utilities.
Now, just a few months later, there's something new called System Update, which looks like another bloated Java app similar to the old Update Connector.
Does anybody know what System Update does that the Software Installer does not? What are IBM/Lenovo's intentions for these two utilites?

I have a T23 dual booting Win98se and WinXP.konad wrote:Coming back to ThinkVantage System Update software, I've got this everytime: "ThinkVantage System Update : Package Index Server Unavailable". Any clue why this happens. (the software should take the proxy info from the browser which is correct configured)
A month or so ago I ran Software Installer under XP, and it did it's thing fine.
Last week I ran Software Installer under 98se, it told me I had to upgrade to ThinkVantage, and provided for download and installation. After I did that it closed, and when I ran ThinkVantage, I got the same message in the quote.

I have a brand new X41.
From my experience, I recommend running BOTH programs, and when you're done, go check the IBM service page for your laptop to see if there are any updates.
System Update gave me all sorts of updates, but it made me install Access IBM (which is now defunct) and it downloads things like BIOS updates in a batch with the other updates, forces you to restart, and then you've lost your other downloaded updates.
One day I accidentally went to Check for Updates from Access Connections and that pulled up the Software Installer, which found more updates that System Update did not fine.
Unfortunately, both programs did not find the updated Access Connections!
