Help! Security Chip Woes...

#1 Post by bkw » Fri Sep 23, 2005 7:34 pm

I just replaced the system board in my 2366-92U (T30 w/ TCPA Security Chip) with a compatible board, but it did not come with the security chip.

I took the chip off my broken board and swapped it in. According to IBM's hardware maintenance manual, it states that the chip in my old board will not work in my new board. Duh. Anyways, I stuck it on there and crossed my fingers knowing that since the T30 has been mine since new, I knew the passwords.

Anyways, I can't seem to get into the BIOS portion that asks for the password of the security chip! I've tried clearing the chip and it tells me that I need to press Fn before the IBM splash screen, then F1 to clear.. well, this doesnt work.

HELP!! What can I do to get my machine working again?? If I remove the chip altogether, would that work??

[censored] you IBM, [censored] YOU!!

I would say (since you like to live dangerously) pull the chip and cross all your fingers. I am assuming that you read the part in the manual that says the chip won't work "after" you put chip in the machine and tried it?

Seriously though I think it should work if you pull the chip. Good luck to you!

Pulled out the chip, getting the 4 beeps and no boot.

I'll tell ya one thing though. I can tear down and rebuild a T30 in less than 10 minutes now

Yup :(

Does anyone know of a way to bypass the system chip? I've emailed the person I purchased this from and he's pretty much clueless as to the whereabouts of the chip.

argh.

How could you possibly want the TPM chip so badly as to risk toasting your brand new board?

Woah, who said it was toast?? I don't think so because when I put the chip back in again, it booted up fine, minus the error 194. I was able to get into the bios and such.

No. soldering that on would be very difficult and besides, that is for the password chip...
