Why does the Z series top out at 2.0GHz?

#1 Post by rocketman » Sat Sep 24, 2005 7:31 pm

I wonder why the Z series tops out at 2.0GHz when the T series can be had with the fastest current PM processor at 2.26GHz. Just because the Z series is considered more of a consumer notebook (I think) and the T series is more for business doesn't mean some consumers don't want the fastest possible processor available. I think it's a mistake that it's not at least an option.

That's a drop-in option they can add at a moment's notice. They're probably just rolling it out with fewer configurations to start with to simplify the logistics, until they get everything ironed out. If there's a demand for faster processors, you bet they'll become available.
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

Yeah, manufacturers never give the whole enchalada from the get-go unless they are of the money-no-object type. They like the piecemeal approach. Add features little by little. Some of the affluent will then buy more than just one, just to keep up with the latest.

If the manufacturer needs to add something to outdo a competitor they will. But the goal is to keep just one step ahead.

IMHO

It depends on the target market. If you want to sell to the mainstream then you want a certain price target.

As prices for CPUs go almost exponentially with processor speed, it is much wiser to stay 200MHz below top speed and save $400, which Intel charges as a premium on their top CPU.

If you wait for 3 months, you get the top speed for "free", because then the top speed would be e.g. 2.5Ghz and the 2.25Ght will be lower range.

Always has been like that, and always will be like that...

Precisely why I got the 2.0 on my T43p and not the 2.13. Paying hundreds of dollars more for an extra 133 mhz is silly when the 2.0 is already pretty zippy.

I'm sorry fbrdphreak. I am just not understanding what's your point with "WORD". What are you saying? What does that have to do with beeblebrox's comment?

I'm not up on all the Hip Hop slang. :? My age and the crowd I hang with I guess.

I haven't been into online discussions until fairly recently, as I've always been away from an internet connection most of the time - that is until I began using cellular service for my connection (first Nextel PacketStream Gold, now Cingular EDGE Laptop Connect). You see, I'm on a boat 2/3rd's of the year.
