USB Wireless Adapter with 600E?

#1 Post by Blarney Murphy » Mon Sep 26, 2005 4:40 pm

I have an Ethernet PCMCIA card that I can use to plug-in at home with High Speed Cable or I can use it in a hotel.
Is there any reason that I can't buy and use a USB 2.0 Wireless Network Adapter to use my TP600E on Wi-Fi Hotspots or in a Hotel or Motel?
I have found three different cards from $11.00 to $20.00 that I think would work, (ENCORE ENVWI-G, SYBA SY-ZYD-WLU2, and TRENDNET TEW 424UB).
HAS ANYONE HAD ANY GOOD OR BAD EXPERIENCE WITH USB WIRELESS ADAPTERS?
Thanks.

One quick reason might be that the 600E does not have USB 2.0 ports, it has USB 1.0 or 1.1. Now, whether you would be able to use one of these USB wireless adapters through a USB 1 port, I don't know.

You should be able to use a USB 2.0 802.1 adapter with the 600E no problem. You will only get USB 1.x speeds, but that shouldn't be a big factor for internet use.

The OS could be a factor. Make sure the card you buy lists your version of Windows under it's system requirements.

Wireless cards

As the other poster said, the 600E is usb 1.0

Why not use a Cardbuss card, they work just fine, I have a Netgear plugged into this unit, I've also used a D-link, (had some problems with it which I now believe may have been 1-D-10-T error (stupid user error) and will re-check soon as I re-find the card)

Tried a Linksys... Got no joy from it

Note: There may be damage to the 5volt leads in my cardbuss slots, (thanks to a USB2.0 card that was wired wrong) both the D-link and the Netgear are 3 volt cards
Nothing adds excitment like something that is none of your business

Thanks for your suggestions and info on USB and Cardbus.
I ordered a Trendnet TEW-441PC 108 Mbps Wireless 32-Bit CardBus
Type II card. From Newegg.com for $25.75 less $10.00 Rebate.

I'll let you know how it works.
