Any notebook dvd burner fit in T43?

#1 Post by Procter » Mon Sep 26, 2005 4:59 pm

I want to replace the CD-rw combo in my T43 with a dvd combo. I see some on-going deals for dvd burner but not sure about if it fits in the ultrabay.

Anyone can recommend some models so that I can keep an eye just for those proper types?

TIA

There are only two drives which will fit the ThinkPad bay, the Panasonic UJ-812 and UJ-822. You can only get them from IBM or eBay on occasion. The 812 burns DVD-Rs and DVD-RAM at 2x. The 822 adds DVD+R at 2.4x. My personal experience with them is they are not very good drives. Besides being slow and expensive, the burn quality is not very good and they are picky on media. They certainly will work, but if more than a disc now and then an external drive is better choice in my opinion. The NEC 6650 is an excellent drive. You can get a USB powered case on the internet around $20. I have the slightly older 6500 in a case. The burn quality is excellent and speedy. I leave the battery in the bay. Good Luck.

Do a search on this. I seem to recall reading a few months back how other drives could fit with a little modification to the face plate.

Check out this thread. It is pertaining to a T23, but the ultrabay devices are the same I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, this may help some. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... t=ultrabay

The NEC and other aftermarket drives (12.7 mm thick) do not fit the T4x series. The T4x series uses 9.5mm thick drives (ultrabay slim). The T2x/T30 uses Ultrabay 2000/Plus devices.

1.As follow picture,
upon one is Ultrabay Slim Multi Plus (UJ-832S),
second is Ultrabay slim COMBO (UJDA-765)
third is Ultrabay Ehanced Multi Plus(UJ-830S)
last is Ultrabay 2000.
its Ultrabay Slim IDE connected,
its same with Ultrabay Enhanced IDE connect.

2.normal Drive's IDE connect type:

like follow photo,
its different with IBM's Ultrabay Slim or Ehanced,
also you take the "nomal type UJ-822 or 832"
you still cant fit it into T40~43 Ultrabay Slim.

Not only 9.5mm or 12.7mm problem,
the majoy key-point is IDE connect.
