Zapped pre-desktop area. Do the recovery CD restore this?

#1 Post by RaysMD » Thu Jul 01, 2004 4:22 pm

So, I zapped the pre-desktop area. Can I restore the entire hard drive with the pre-desktop area using the recovery CDs?

Yes. You should find an option to do this when you first boot from the recovery CD.

ONLY if the HDD is empty (ie NO partitions).

I have not been able to do this. I have posted about it before, but that was a while ago.

Even when I have no partitions, the predesktop area is never restored. I have even tried a low level format. I have also toggled the Predesktop Area option in the BIOS. I have called up IBM and they confirmed that I do have the correct recovery CDs for my T41p. I talked to them for an hour and they couldn't figure it out. If anyone has ideas, please help.

Make sure that the Security Bios setting says Normal for the PreDesktop area.

Then I would see if this tool shows a predesktop area: http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46025

If so, delete it.

Also, as others have stated: the hard disk must not have any partitions.
