x30 Trackpoint Freezes After Suspend

After I suspend and refire up, the trackpoint on my X30 is frozen and I have to manually power down and reboot to get it working again.

This also happens if I undock while powered up.

I tried calling IBM/Lenovo tech support about this but the guy I got seemed more interested in my solving his problems than him helping me (I am not kidding about this).

I do not have my external mouse connected while this is happening.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

I've done some more investigating. In Device Manager (Win XP) I find the only'Mouse and other pointing devices' listed is 'Kensington PS/2 Mouse Driver'.

Shouldn't there also be a Trackpoint listed?

(Sometimes I use an external wireless Kensington mouse and sometimes I don't bother with it. Right now I am not using it.)

I have downloaded the current Trackpoint driver from the IBM/Lenovo website but don't know where it should go, since there is no Trackpoint in the list, and I can't figure out how to add one.

I suppose I could delete the Kensington driver, reboot and see what happens, but I'd like a little more of a comfort level before I do that.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have just downloaded and installed and run the Software Installer program from the IBM/Lenovo website.

It now tells me the installed version of the IBM Trackpoint Driver is 6.3.4.2.

It also tells me the latest version available is 3.55.0.0.

Then I go to Device Manager and see the driver for the Kensington PS/2Mouse is version 6.3.4.2.

This is confusing to me.

I'm still finding the Trackpoint freezing after a suspend and re-start operation.

As another test (after inducing a freeze by suspending and then re-starting) I tried plugging my portable IBM travel mouse into a usb port, but still could not get the cursor to move.

Then I plugged in my Kensington wireless mouse (see prior posts) and now I see it appearing in Device Manager in addition to the plain old 'Kensington PS/2 Mouse Driver' but I still can't get the cursor to move.

More data: I have the x30 running normally and plug in the IBM usb travel mouse. I have the Trackpoint configuration set (in the TP setup) to 'automatic'. Now both the trackpoint and mouse function.

So I suspend (Fn + F4) and then start up (Fn) and only the usb travel mouse functions; the Trackpoint does nothing.

OK, that's a BIOS issue.

Go into the BIOS, and set it to Enable (if there's such an option).

A little while ago I had some more time to devote to this issue so I called IBM support again and this time got someone who seemed more knowledgeable and willing to tackle my problem. He took me through a number of settings, including making sure the BIOS was set to enable, but nothing solved the problem.

One thing we discussed was the apparent contradiction between what was showing in Device Manager as the mouse driver (the Kensington version) and what should be the IBM version (see my 2nd and 3rd posts). However, deleting the Kensington version and then re-booting just reinstalled it.

His conclusion was that some newly installed software (could be anything) was blocking the Trackpoint from operating after waking up from suspend.

After talking to him I tried one more thing before shelving the project: I forced an install of the IBM driver.

Voila. I now have two drivers (Kensington and Lenovo) and the Trackpoint works after its nap.
