Thinkpad T43 'key' mis printing

#1 Post by arjunrc » Tue Sep 27, 2005 7:03 pm

Hello,
I have an odd problem. I received a new thinkpad T43 laptop - it seems one of the keys is misprinted.

Instead of the key which is supposed to be a <?> it is printed as the <"> key . In other words, if you look at my keyboard, you see two keys, both with the <"> key printed on them. Fortunately, though, this is only a surface printing error. If I press the second <"> key which is actually a <?> key, it prints a ?

The problem is that this misprinting is confusing, especially when someone needs to borrow my laptop and they get confused where the ? key is.

I called lenovo and they said the only way is for me to return this laptop and order a new one. I have spent too much time re-configuring my machine to return it, so I was wondering if there are any sites from where I could buy a sticker for a key which does not peel or, maybe even pluck out this key and replace with a new one. Lenovo does not sell keys as separate parts.

Finally, I am curious, some keys have 3 characters printed on them. I know how to invoked the first two (shift and no shift) - how does one use the 3rd printed character ? I tried Alt, Ctrl - did not work. Just curious.

The keys can be popped-off. Search for the post "Vacuumed the hell out of my keyboard". They can be put back as well. If you could acquire a key or keyboard from e-bay, you could fix your problem.

Regarding the 3rd character on certain keys. Press Shift + ScrLk. That turns on the NumLk feature. You now have a numeric keypad for entering numbers (say in a spreadsheet), and doing basic math (say in a on-screen calculator). The |+|-|*|/|.| keys are add, subtract, multiply, divide, and decimal. You will notice that the (number 1 inside of an arrow) LED icon at the bottom of the display lid lights up when Num Lock is on.

Other option...

The keyboard is a user replacable part. See if IBM will send you a new keyboard to replace your misprinted one. You just swap keyboards and mail the old one back to IBM.

Thanks Folks,
I just got off the call with their tech support - they will be sending me
a new T43 keyboard for replacement free and I just need to discard the old one. Cool.
