Windows Update hardware updates safe?

#1 Post by deviousalex » Wed Sep 28, 2005 1:38 pm

In windows update I can choose two hardware updates to install. One is titled "Lenovo - Other Hardware - ThinkPad PM Device" and the other is "ATI Technologies, Inc - Video - ATI MOBILITY RADEON X300." Are these updates safe to install via windows update?

Was it posted somewhere to not download these?

I wish I had seen this post yesterday, because I downloaded both of those updates last night. This morning, my computer had a 'serious error' every time I rebooted or tried to bring it out of standby. I use standby frequently, and three times in a row, it rebooted when I tried to bring it out ot standby, and I got a message that my computer had recovered from a serious error. I did a system restore from two days ago and everything is fine now.

So which one of the updates is the culprit? And what is going on? Why is it doing that?

Ditto.
(I see that I am not the only one that has apparantly had problems with Windows hardware updates).

I also just recently have had similar problems on a non-ibm computer with Windows updates. I updated the ATI drivers on my computer. That screwed everything up, no more dual display control, it removed all of my opengl config stuff, and my external monitor was not allowed to use it's max resolution. Luckily I rolled back my drivers and everything worked fine.

I updated the IBM PM driver (but left alone the ATI driver) from the Microsoft Update website. The PM driver has been working fine. In fact, when I use the IBM update tool, it detects the PM driver and shows that it is actually newer than the one being offered by the IBM update tool.

I forget who I talked to (IBM, or my Vendor - a gold IBM partner). In any event, some while back (before Update Connector and Software Installer) I did ask them, and they said only use IBM-tested updates.

I presumed from that only to use HP-tested printer updates, and so on, and so I totally ignore Windows Hardware Updates. I have never used it and I never will (at least so far as I can fathom).

Yes - I think I did in the prior post - that is, I got the information from IBM only to use IBM-tested updates on IBM boxes, and I find the advice reasonable. I don't wish to take chances. ... JD Hurst

Just in reading posts here, I think I recall people occasionally reporting that installing hardware updates from the Windows Update site sometimes caused problems for them.

My policy is just to go with the hardware updates posted by IBM/Lenovo on their support site.

Slightly OT, I do like the "Microsoft" as opposed to "Windows" Update site that combines searching for Windows updates and MS Office updates (and perhaps other MS products as well?). But, as I said above, I ignore the hardware updates offered there as well.

this is my experienc:
I installed the PM driver which from lenovo in windows update.I rebooted my TP.everything were going fine.Them I installed the RADEON X300 driver which from ATI INC in windows update.at the begining, all the things looked fine.but one day,I pressed the Fn+F4 to standby my TP.It took very long time to go to standby mode.then,I waked the TP to see what had happened to my TP.It tooked a very long time to wake up too.finally,it showed me a blue screen, and rebooted it self.
as Jmmmmm an my experienc,we sure 2 things!
1,the most hardware driver updates in windows update are not safe.them will bring our TP some problem.such as standby and wake up problem.
2,the hardware driver updates which come from lenovo or IBM in windows update are safe.We can install them.
