Intel 2100 3B no good?

#1 Post by chris-ee » Wed Sep 28, 2005 2:27 pm

Hi, I am new here, but I have to type quick before I get booted off my wireless connection!

I just bought a T41 and love it!

The only thing that is bugging me is that the wireless connection is dropped very frequently, even when the signal strength is high.

I have the intel 2100 3B and have noticed many people upgrade to the IBM A/B/G II for the faster connection.

Or is one of the reasons because the intel card isn't very good? Will getting the A/B/G solve the dropping problems? I've tried drivers and getting closer to the hub, etc.

What other advantages besides the speed of G does the new card offer?

Thanks,

Chris

I have the same wifi card and also the same problem. I think its a driver problem. For me it was worse with the latest driver (v. 1.2.4.35). Now I'm on v. 1.2.3.14 and it works fairly good... I cant say for sure, but maybe one drop out in 8 hours continuous use instead of 5-10 with the newest driver.

My accesspoint is the Netgear wgr614 (v4, latest firmware).
I have tried to change channel, but it didn't help.

Another nice side effect with the 1.2.3.14 driver is that the fan shuts of when the computer is idling at 600MHz.

I used to have exactly the same issue and finally gave up after millions of driver updates. Swapped for the IBM a/b/g and it just works. The G is not that noticeable unless you start copying large files over the wireless network.
The IBM card just has a completely different Atheros chipset instead of Intel; it is reportedly much better optimised.
I never had any connection drop since I swapped the cards.
