How to update PreDesktop Area ?

#1 Post by tperica » Wed Sep 28, 2005 3:12 pm

hi

I want to make new reinstall of my ThinkPad T42. Wondering about PreDesktop Area, do I need to copy new DRIVERS, IBMTOOLS, etc ... or everything is updated automatically via IBM Software Installer. (If I will use PreDesktop Area for reinstallation, shall I get factory//old driver versions)

Anybody have any link with such a topic or procedure ? thanks

cheers

If you use the predesktop area to restore to Factory State, then the ThinkPad will be just like it was when you received it new (with the exception of BIOS and firmware updates - which should stay at the most recent level that they were updated).

If you have created a backup with Rescue and Recovery (Rapid Restore Ultra), you can use the predesktop area or Rescue Media (not to be confused with the Recovery Disc set) to restore your backup.

1. backup Personal files, DRIVERS, IBMTOOLS folder, etc
2. make reinstallation from PreDesktop Area
3. install IBM Soft. Installer

If you are doing a recovery (which is what you are suggesting) then you only need back up personal files. The drivers and IBM folder and all comes with the recovery. The newest Software Installer works a treat for getting all your drivers with one exception.

As I have noted before, uninstall Access Connections before updating any wireless NIC.

So first install BIOS and Embedded Controller updates, then run Software Installer and install everything except Access Connections and wireless drivers. Then uninstall Access Connections. Then install new wireless. Then install the newest Access Connections.

Then recover your personal files from wherever you saved them.

The other thing you can do is to run Files and Settings transfer wizard to backup My Documents (Mail lives there) and settings before you recover. When you restore using this tool, it brings back some custom settings.

I am doing reinstallation, fresh install. thanks for the wireless tip, I noticed some problems but didn't have time to study.
anyway, I will do this:

1. factory default
2. install drivers, IBM tools and some basic software
3. make backup - that will be something like "clean image"
4. load personal backup files
5. regular "files backup"

thanks to everyone
