X32 warranty question: why some 1 year, and others 3 years?

#1 Post by Adam » Wed Sep 28, 2005 6:52 pm

Hey guys. I didn't see another thread about this so I hope it's cool that I'm creating one. I'm still trying to decide which laptop/tablet to get. I really want IBM (or should I say Lenovo) but they're lack of stock is a huge turn-off. Waiting 4 weeks for a laptop doesn't really lure me in.

Anyway, I was looking at the X32's and found some the pricing and warranty lengths a bit weird. I didn't really understand it. Here is a breakdown of the models that they have in Canada, the basic specs, the warranty, and the price:

(2672ABU) - 1600Mhz, 256MB, 40gig - 3 year warranty ---> $1,889.00
(2672M5U) - 1800Mhz, 512MB, 40gig - 1 year warranty ---> $2,199.00
(2672MDU) - 1800Mhz, 512MB, 60gig - 3 year warranty ---> $2,299.00
(2673M3U) - 1800Mhz, 256MB, 40gig - 3 year warranty ---> $2,349.00 (no WiFi)

First off, I don't understand why the 2nd one only has a 1 year warranty compared to the others with the 3 year. Could this be a typo? And the last one makes no sense... its the most expensive but has worse specs than the one for $150 less.

Any info is appreciated as always.

Thanks,
Adam.

Well, I don't access the Canadian site, but....

Some models are 3 year warranty, and some are 1 year. That's the way it has been for a long time with IBM, long before Lenovo took over.
With the 1 year models, you can upgrade to 3 year, onsite, Thinkpad Protection, etc. With the 3 year, you can upgrade to onsite and Thinkpad Protection.

As has long been the case, some models are just priced better, and some make no sense as to why they are priced higher with less features.

As always with IBM, look at the total package and price to make a decision.

Sometimes the Think Express models are the least money, sometimes not.
The Think Express configurations can not be changed, you have to take them as they come.

Also, the 2672 machine type will be depot warranty, whereas the 2373 will already have onsite coverage. It is the same with all Thinkpad machine types - for example, 2373 T42's have a depot warranty, the 2374's are all onsite. For example, 23733VU and the 23743VU are the exact same machine, except the warranty coverage.
