X20 motherboard/network card problem

#1 Post by mgiammarco » Thu Sep 29, 2005 7:18 am

Hello,
I have an old X20. I added some time ago the ibm minipci with intel 10/100mbit network card and modem.

Now the computer beeps several times when I power on it. Then I use network card normally but after some time it stops working (sending and receiving packets). I have changed minipci card but problem persists.

Can you please help me? Thanks in advance!

What version of bios and embedded controller do you have? I've seen this before with Intel cards. There are some known bugs with certain versions of bios and embedded controller for Intel and Xircom cards (especially for the Xircom cards).

Upgrade both to the latest version. That should correct the problem.

I have upgraded bios. Embedded controller is already at latest version. It seems I can upgrade firmware of mini-pci, but how? I cannot find the right software.
Can someone suggest me a cheap alternative to my mini-pci card that works and I eventually buy on ebay?

Thanks again!

BTW: at power on it beeps several times as I said. But if I have ac unplugged it says also:
"Error: power source is battery, press F1 to continue"

Very strange!

You mentioned your machine beeps several times on bootup but you didn't mention the sequence. That sequence can be used to troubleshoot your problem. Beep symptoms for your machine can be found in the X2x Hardware Maintenance Manual on page 51. It is available for download HERE.
