What is Client Security and do I need it?

#1 Post by schleptop » Fri Sep 30, 2005 12:09 am

After installing a lot of Thinkpad updates and Rescue and Recovery I now have an irritating Client Security widget running every time I start WinXP on my X40. What does that do? If I don't really need it, how can I get rid of it?

For information on what the Client Security Software does.......

Launch Access IBM. Go to: Get Help & Support > View references > Use on-system help > type in Security > double-click on it and choose Client Security Software.

When I updated Rescue and Recovery it asked if I wanted to install the Client Security Software. I chose NO. It still will install some Client Security Software, just not the whole package. Also I only have the Windows user password set up on my laptop. When asked if I wanted to set up passwords I chose NO. The only thing I see different is; during boot-up an information box pops up for a few seconds indicating the Client Security Software is loading.

If you do not want this, I suggest you uninstall Rescue and Recovery 3 and install an older version. I believe an older version is still available on IBM's site. The version that came with your Thinkpad can be reinstalled. Launch Access IBM. Go to: Protect & Recover > Recover your computer data > Recover preinstalled software.

Thanks for the suggestion - I did the reading but am still not sure why/whether I need this. I sure as heck didn't order an embedded Security Chip, so why should this be installed? I also didn't choose to install the CSS when I did the update. With my already glacial bootup the last thing I need is another useless piece of software taking up more time.

I suppose I could do the rollback as suggested but that doesn't seem like the most fun thing in the world.

Ironically I chose IBM because I liked the idea that I could get software updated regularly but overall it's given me more headaches than just doing updates via Windows on my other PCs.

It would probably be easier to uninstall RNR v3 and install v2.04.0182 which doesn't include CSS, that's what I did for the very reasons you mentioned. RNR v2.04.0182 is still available at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-57264

I had the same thing happen.

Selected all "recommened" in software installer and bam I have client security.

Not sure if it is CS but now takes forever for my wife to log on (her laptop) .... she's about ready to strangle me for "fixing" her laptop

You can go to Add or Remove Programs in Windows Control Panel and uninstall Client Security Software and Rescue & Recovery. There is a chart in the file below that gives some useful information on pages 9-13.

When you installed Client Security you have been asked about the size of the SECURE DRIVE and if you want to create one at all! But nevertheless, just unmount the SECURE Drive (with the Client Security app in All Programs -> Thinkvantage -> Client Security and the click the "Secure Data" Icon or whatever it is called in English in the lower right corner). After that delete the file (probably in your My Documents Folder or just search for a file with a *.vol suffix).

A bit OT, but I have never seen a laptop which comes with so much software as the Thinkpads do! Even Sony's pale in comparison.
