IBM T42 need help....

#1 Post by hanviet » Fri Sep 30, 2005 12:12 am

Hi,

After buying a new T42, I don't use Windows XP. And I setup Windows Server 2003. By insert CD, installing, and after that I can not access IBM restore program by press Access IBM button. However, the HPA is still there, I don't delete it and I think I can re-enable it again. Do you know how to restore this function? I need test something on my laptop by restore Windows XP Professional.

The mainly error is very strange. My laptop always notify me: Power Purge on USB Hub, and my laptop is not running smooth. I open the Task Manager, and see that the CPU doing other task, I don't know who it is, and make the system is very busy every 20-30 seconds. I tested by listen music only, and the song is corrupted (paused, stopped) in 1-2 seconds and then continued, it happen every 20-30 seconds .

Please help me to fix those errors. Thank you very much!

PS. Because I could not use functions in Access IBM button, I tried install my own lisenced Windows XP, but those errors are remain. I disabled the error USB Hub in Device Manager, but my CPU is not running smooth. If I disable all USB, I think it runs normal. I sent for warranty, they said that software error and they sent back to me without any change. What is error?

1st question : I think the fresh install of the win2kserver has installed its own mbr, making the HPA not bootable anymore.

2nd question, no idea. My old laptop made this error too "power surge on usb hub". But it made it only when i was connecting an external 2.5'' hdd (selfpowered by usb).

CPU utilization : try to use the process manager (ctrl+maj+escape) and sort processes by the cpu utilization. You should be able to see which process require all that power.

BTW : Did you install all drivers on your fresh install ? I mean especially chipset, graphic ?

Thank for your quick reply, nrj45!

1. Sure, I known. But I don't know how to make the HPA is active again. I think there is some software can fix it. If anyone known, please tell me!

2. Firstly, I'm so sorry because my language error, English is not my active language ;). You show the right error:
Power Surge On USB Hub
A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port.
For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.
I have an external HDD too. But the error always show, even my external HDD does not connect to my laptop. Anyway, I still use my external HDD both in my desktop and laptop. So is it hardware or software error? I don't know exactly error because it always show the message, if I click the message and close the dialog, it appears quickly again. :(

I don't like some softwares in factory default installation. But I'm SURE that I installed driver for chipset and graphic, some important utilities: Active Protect, Battery Maximiser.

My laptop is not here, I will check again processes and report later!

If you know anything, please help me! Thank you very much!
