HELP!Windows unable to save data for file \$MFT

#1 Post by pej2000 » Fri Sep 30, 2005 1:23 am

Hey Gang,
I've had my T42 for about a year and its been great for me.
Just this week I've started getting this error.
Can anyone give me a clue as to what this might be? And how to fix it?
I've started backing up data in case its something really bad.

THanks
Paul

Possibly a hard drive going out. Try running PC Doctor or Drive Fitness Test.

I'm going to 2nd the disk error.

It may not be a physical disk error (something that DFT would detect), but it could be corruption as well. So run scandisk on it (in the command prompt type "chkdsk").

chdsk runs ok.

I'm seeing a lot of stuff on the web relating this to various XP and driver issues. Seems unlikely since it has all run fine before.

Does PC doctor or Drive Fitness Test do a more thorough test?

Yes. Just look at the link I provided above for features of Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test.

Thanks for the info.
Drive Fitness Test did not find any problems.
I've run Software Installer to update a bunch of stuff.

I'd like to back everything up. Is IBMRNR a good way to do that? I know its intalled, but I can't find it. Where do they hide this thing?

What I mean to say is that while Rapid Restore Ultra is in the AccessIBM programs menu, IBM Restore and Recover is not. But strangely, RNR does show up if I look at ADD/REMOVE programs and here RRU does not show up.

I'm confused. :?

IBM Rapid Restore Ultra is part of IBM Rescue and Recovery. IBM Rapid Restore Ultra is what you want to use to do your backup.

I have had a similar error, using Norton System Works Utilites. It would give me an error that an MFT.dll was missing. I did a google and found a site to download the dll file and placed it in the root of my C drive, this corrected that problem.

***DISCLAIMER***

I realize this is not an exact duplication of the issue, it is only intended as a personal experience and a possibility.

What if I would rather backup to another place on my network? If I backup to my own hard disc it takes up a lot of space and doesn't help me if the drive goes bad?

Switch tactics
What is the best way for me to get this thing evaluated and fixed?
I live in Taos, New Mexico. So I'm expecting I'll have to ship it.
Thanks
