New usere here, with a "new" T23

#1 Post by Temetka » Fri Sep 30, 2005 4:40 am

Greetings and Salutations fellow Thinkpadders!

I found the forum here through a link at ArsTechnica. Great forum, so I joined up. I have always loved thinkpads. I used to own a 770x, but coffee killed it.

I recently picked up a rather nice T23 from e-bay and am using it now. Here's my specs

1.2GHz PIII-M
768MB Ram (came with 512 and I will add another 512 shortly)
60GB Toshiba HD. Runs @ 5400RPM and has 16MB of cache. Way faster than the 4200RPM 20GB drive it shipped with.
DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
Asante 802.11g Wireless card
Docking station

Couple of questions.

1. Where can I find the battery for the ultrabay?
2. Some models feature built in wireless (not mine, hence the card). Is the wireless 802.11g or 802.11b?
2b. If it is 802.11g where can I get one from
3. I had heard that the main battery can be replaced with ones from different models. If so, which battery has the longest run time?
4. Any chance on upgrading the video (some newer laptops support removeable video cards)?
5. Where can I get the IBM wallpapers/desktop pics that ship with all thinkpads?

I have to say I really love this machine. Everytime I pick it up, I am amazed at how light it is. It's even lighter that my 500MHz Powerbook G3 (which is rather light). Not only is it light, but fast. Windows XP SP2 runs great on it.

Anyway just wanted to say "hi" to everyone. Hi everyone!

Edit: Just realized I posted this in the X forum when it should have gone into the T forum. Maybe a mod can move it for me?

So I ordered a T30 battery from e-bay. The seller is offering a 1 year one warranty on it and claims it is brand new. So I am looking forward to that.

Is the modem on a mini PCI card also? I do have a mini PCI card installed but after letting the IB< software configure everything no wireless shows up. I am assuming then that I need to get a wireless card. I am hoping that it will use less battery than my PCMCIA card.

Thanks for the help so far. :)
