First; Disable Windows; [control pannel/network connections/rtclk-wireless network connection/properties/wireless networks tab/DISABLE:
'use windows to configure my wireless network settings']...

Next; hit the radio icon/show status/Modify WLAN Settings/[Wireless tab/
Edit wireless settings....follow the screen shots from #3 to #16

Edit; Link no longer available

Note; In #1 & #3, SSID will appear as linksys default untill renamed ...

Nice post!

Two things stood out as I viewed your screen shots.

First, you are using WEP. I was wondering why you don't use WPA-PSK /TKIP? WEP is not as secure as WPA-PSK /TKIP. I don't have a Linksys router, but I thought that the WRT54g supported the newer and better WPA-PSK /TKIP.

Second, I notice that you are using Access Connections 3.71. The most recent version is 3.81. Also, you didn't mention which wireless driver version you are using.

1st; WPA-PSK/TKIP would certainly be a posible upgrade...
(Aside from PSK being preshared key) I have no knowledge of the settings required...Is it 128 bit?...

2nd; The new software installer, (Fantastic tool), is not updating AC from 3.71 to 3.81 ???
(Also); Is not the Wireless driver actually the 'driver version' listed under; 'adapter details' as, '4.1.102.1095' on the status page? (Screenshot #1)...
[Confirmed in device mgr...(Atheros driver)]

by simply turning on the radio...

Missed seeing the wireless driver version in the 1st screenshot. It's there alright.

Link for Info on Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA and WPA2). Yes it is 128-bit encryption.

Setting up WAP is quite easy. All you need to do is make up a password that you put in the router settings and in the laptop's wireless adapter settings, which in this case is ThinkVantage Access Connections.

On your screen shot #2, click on Edit Wireless LAN settings... On the next screen choose Wireless Security Type to be WPA-PSK. Click Next>, now choose Access Point Authentication: either WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK (better). Next choose Data Encryption Method: either TKIP or AES. Then choose Pre-Shared Key, make sure radio button for Use 8-63 Alphanumeric characters (0-9, a-z) is chosen, and type in your password which must be between 8 and 63 characters long, using only numbers and lower case letters. Now click Finish.

Setting up the router is simular. You need to make the same choices as you do with the wireless adapter. Set up the router first, then you can see what choices are available regarding Access Point Authentication: either WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK, and regarding Data Encryption Method: either TKIP or AES. Use the same password. Use WPA2-PSK if it is available, as it is even better than WPA-PSK.

BTW, in my version of Access Connections, if I click on Help, there is a menu choice to check for updates. If version 3.71 does not have this, I can provide a link to version 3.81 if you are interested.

I found 3.71/ac listed for the t41...

I wonder if 3.81 & the t41 will play well together...?

Apparently the Atheros driver; 4.1.102.1095 ['or higher'] is a prerequisite for ac3.81

Update; have installed 3.81...all is well...

Niether is truly secure. If you are just trying to keep out causal "war drivers" (or someone nearby piggybackimg on your Internet link) then WEP is fine.

If you are trying to keep out a detrrmined intrusion attack WPA-PSK (1 or 2) is not adequate. There not really much that falls in between those two scenarios for domestic WLANs.

Given that, WEP is somewhat easier to set up and less fussy to trouble shoot.
