insert windows cd??

#1 Post by Nabeel » Fri Jul 02, 2004 12:31 am

The windows file protection suddnely popped up and said to insert the windows cd..well I've tried all of the recovery cds, and none of them work..what do i do??

I'm scanning for a virus now, but I'm afaird to click cancel or abort, lest I be left unbootable..

I got a few popoups and then this appeared. Would popups be able to cause something like that?

I have a Windows XP Pro (not SP1 though) CD downstairs that I can't get to now, it wants an SP1 cd..grr. It's so annoying, it doesn't even mention which files were modified.

Any ideas/suggestions?

I think you should be able to point to the directory c:\I386 and it should work.

I agree that by not providing the correct CD's IBM are letting us down a little. The recovery cd's are useless in your case, and reinstalling completely is not a viable solution.

Strange but I didn't think SP2 existed on CD - I know one can download the Beta version, but a CD? Are you sure it's not a virus playing you around?

I can't point it to a directory, it wants a CD :(
I'll them up and see what they say

I meant SP1, typo..sorry about that. It was at 2am so I wasn't really thinking. No viruses or anything, and I rebooted and it seems fine, I guess it restored it from the dllcache folder. I still want the actual windows cd though.

I think you will find that something has gone wrong with your software (viruses, worms and trojan spring to mind). In my own experience (nearly a dozen of my own laptops and hundreds of client machines), Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro preloads from IBM have never asked for a Windows CD.

I did have such a problem on a T30, but it had to do with a bad preload from a bad set of recovery CD's (so something had gone wrong with the software). IBM corrected the CD's, I reloaded, and there were no more problems. ... JDHurst

You could try burning the I386 directory to CD and using that...
Also you might try a registry cleaner/fixer.

There's no viruses or anything, the disk is completely clean. I haven't gotten a chance to call IBM yet.
