I Need Hibernation Advice!
I Need Hibernation Advice!
Hi There,
I own a T43p. It took around 3minutes for the thinkpad to boot up to Windows until I can use the computer without sluggishness.
The question is, I enjoy using the hibernation, it's a lot faster to start up when turning on the computer from fresh. So..
If I keep using hibernation all the time, would it cause any problems? Stability wise? Or I should turn off my computer completely at the end of the day to preserve system stability? Would there be a problem? Perhaps memory hog like in PocketPC? I would really hope that I could use hibernation all the time without having to turn off the computer completely, or without having to restart my computer. What's the best thing I should do?
Usually I'm having a lot of problems with my pocketpc. I have to soft reset every few days.

I remember seeing this covered in a thread awhile back. It seems that most users recommend doing a reboot at least once per week.
I use Standby (suspend) alot, and it works great for me. Others prefer Hibernation. It takes a little longer to come out of Hibernation than it does Standby, but Standby drains your battery over a period of time, while Hibernation does not.

Woild be nice ot get your error on suspend fixed. I love suspend and use it all the time. I have used my notebooks on and off for over a week while just using suspend and never rebooting.
During the day while I carry my laptop from one customer to another is stay in suspend. It takes less time to wake up than hibernation.

i use both standby and hibernation.jlingo wrote:Yes, Unfortunately my suspend mode is giving me BSOD and problems with ATI driver. I don't know what causes the problem. So I had no choice but to choose hibernation option.
last june when i bought my t43 i went ahead with 5.6 catalyst and no problems at all. after i upgraded to 5.8 returning from standby would crash it and then i went back to 5.6 which never gave me problems.
so i guess you have a driver issue...try 5.6 from guru3d.com and see what happens.

Personnally, i rarely use the hibernation a lot (but I keep it activated). Since i use my t43p everyday, i only put it in standby mode (it takes me about 3% battery per night !!!).
BTW : some times ago, i was always using the hibernation... I had the same problem as you. When you hibernate your thinkpad, all the ram goes in "parallel swap file" (it's a hidden file in c:\hyberfil.sys its size is about the same as your ram size).
My personal diagnostic (BE CAREFUL, IT'S NOT OFFICIAL BUT JUST MY FEELING) : When you wake your thinkpad up, it will retrieve only needed pages from this hyberfil.sys file. So when you will use your opened applications for the first time since you woke the computer up, ram information have to be retrieved from the hyberfil.sys and recopied in ram. And that's why your computer becomes faster and faster as you're using your computer.

IBM X31 2672B1J 1.3G/1G/120G/CISCO 350
It is an ATI driver it can also be downloaded from ATI directly at http://www2.ati.com/drivers/catalyst_mobility_59.htmljlingo wrote:First I would like to apologize for my ignorance but what is Catalyst 5.6? I only updated the video driver that is provided by the IBM, and Thinkvantage Software Installer. I haven't installed any third party driver.
I never tried it though, have no problems with IBM's driver.
Also on Guru3D, there are 3 types of driver catalyst. Do I download the normal one? or?
Also when I uninstalled Hdravision and ATI driver, I lost my stand by and hibernation menu.
Before uninstal I was using ATI driver: 8.082.2-041211m-019929C-IBM

Problem solved. I uninstalled ATI driver all together and reinstalled.
Thanks guys

If I were you jlingo, I would uninstall the existing video driver and install the latest ATI driver from IBM. It works for monkey243. Probably what happened to you is that the driver didn't install properly the last time.
In this page you will find the latest driver and installation instructions. I would download the readme file and follow the instructions exactly. Of course you need to download the driver file as well.
EDIT: Well I see you got your problem solved jlingo.
I noticed this after my reply posted.
