[Rant] [censored] kids... (and damage to my X21) (*IMAGE WARNING*)

#1 Post by bhtooefr » Sat Oct 01, 2005 7:05 pm

I wrote:get off my lawn! (or, in this case, my laptop bag...)

OK, I'm at a friend's house, OK, and we're getting ready to leave. I have to quickly check something, so I set my bags (one has textbooks, the other has my laptop) down.

So, I turn to go away, and this little kid runs up and starts [censored] kicking the laptop bag. My first instinct is to tear the little [censored] to shreds, but I hold it back, and just yell at him. His dad, who was right there (but not looking at that moment), proceeds to chew him out as well, along with the friend of mine.

The story doesn't end there.

I go home, and plug in the laptop to check my e-mail and my forums before I go to bed. I fire it up. It comes up really... [censored]... slowly... Anyway, when I start Opera, I notice something... first, it's taking five minutes to start when it usually takes about 15 seconds, and second, it's making a noise like this: "grind click click click grind click click click grind click click click grind"

Anyway, I'm going to be ordering a new HDD from Newegg: Samsung Spinpoint M MP0402H

It's a 40GB 5400RPM laptop drive, versus the Hitachi 20GB 4200RPM that's in it now.
That's what I entered here.

From what I've read, that HDD is reliable, quiet, fast, and is a good value.

That sucks.

I got a Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 40gb 5400rpm about a week ago. System is much faster and quieter now. Replaced the original X20 12gb drive.

For a second, I thought about getting a 20GB 5K100, but it was $61 versus $63.50 for this Samsung drive I'm looking at...

Quick question for you all: what is the best tool for moving a partition from one drive to another? This'll be in a DESKTOP that I'll be doing this, BTW.

That must have been some monster kid, and he must have had steel toed boots on when he kicked it.

I have fallen on my T41 and done physical damage (not running at the time), pulled it off a table onto the floor whilst travelling this year (running full tilt), dropped my bag carrying my laptop any number of times, and not damaged the hard drive in any way. In fact, no normal abuse has ever damaged a ThinkPad hard drive of mine.

In any event, I hope your new drive works well. ... JD Hurst

Well, this laptop's been through some hell. Tripped over the power cord, sending it face down HARD into the floor, one time. I'm sure I've dropped the (non-padded) case too hard a couple of times.

But, it wasn't that. It was a FOUR YEAR OLD that did the HDD in.

Well-placed kicks, and a freak accident?

I just wish Hitachi had a 5-year warranty, because I'd be using it, saying that I set my laptop down, and it did that... of course, seeing as that's an OEM drive, I'm not sure that that would even work - and the ThinkPad's warranty's been expired for over a year.

Will the trial allow moving the FULL 20GB partition?

If not, I need something free... (I'd much rather it be legal, but if it has to be pirated...)

Could Linux dd do the job?

I think so (I seem to remember the trial is fully functional for 15 days).

I don't know, but here are a couple of other pointers (if you want to go the Linux way):
1. Partition Image
2. G4L (Ghost for Linux)

Thanks, domi...

Anyway... my X21 is temporarily running. You're probably asking, "what is this kid doing, running a damaged HDD?"

I'm not. I took the thing out, and I'm running MandrakeMove.

And, I *HATE* MandrakeMove with a passion, now - setting up tp-scroll was a total bear, because it's not easy to get out of the X server, and then once you're out, there's a watchdog that checks for X, and if it's not running, runs "shutdown -h now"... so I had to type quickly :P

My gf's family has a lot of dogs (especially American Eskimos).

In the past I'd lent her my X40, but her biggest dog (who also happens to be the cutest and friendliest) has a penchant to jump on people and things. I'd seen him jump on the laptop before, luckily it was on a soft sofa.

Her other dog (the naughty one) pees on her things when he's ignored. Actually some of the dogs just like to pee since they're never trained and she's a pushover (but I'm a clean freak, argh!). Previously he'd peed on her Dell laptop, old bed/pillows, not to mention the floor. She just told me tonight that her optical drive's not working... she thinks it was one of the dogs.

I have not let her borrowed the X41 Tablet yet, even though she really loves to draw on it  With the X40 I'd scrubbed every inch of it from time to time with wipes and such...

Well, the new hard drive is in, one day early :D

It's currently sitting inside this laptop, but I'm in Linux right now, because I can't get to the computer with the burner - and the network drivers have to be burned :(

Also, the adaptors came in a LOT earlier than I thought, but I don't have access to a computer I can tear apart for the copy operation right now, so I had to set up a new Win2K install :(

It survived that kid? Dang

I was in a lighting storm once, got up, slipped, but instead of falling, my left arm went for the table, my right arm went for the table but got on the lid of my T43, then I looked at my right arm, uh oh
The T43 still works problemless
I weigh 220 pounds...

Thats a lot for a laptop to go through.

It DIDN'T survive the kid.

There's something rattling around inside the HDD, so I'm not sure it'll power up any more...

My laptop's survived drops, abuse, and all sorts of stuff, but it still worked - until the HDD failure caused by the kid :(

Gotta say, the best thing I did to this laptop, though? Getting a 5400RPM drive in there to replace the dead drive :D

It's WICKED fast.

A friend yesterday finally returned a couple of USB drives that she had borrowed (2.5" HDDs in USB casings). One seems rather scratched, and it makes a loud rattling sound when I shake it now. I'm almost afraid to open the casing to check, but at least it does still work when I plug it in...

And at least that was the old drive. The newer 120GB laptop drive (containing anime videos) seems in pristine physical shape.
