problem with the Software Installer

#1 Post by idander » Sun Oct 02, 2005 8:52 am

Greetings!

I have started to get an annoying error from the Thinkvantage Software Installer.
When I run it, and and select to update from the web, it starts downloading a bunch of xml-files before it checks what is already installed on my laptop.

When it comes to the file named tvtrnr3_1027tr_2_.xml (or when it finishes with the file, not easy to say), the Software Installer hangs, and I get the usual error message from Windows telling me there was a problem and it had to close the program.

Anyone else with this problem? I can't seem to find anything similar on the web, and I'm v e r y close to wiping my disk and reinstall everything.
I've tried to reinstall the Software Installer and downgrading some of my last updates, but to no use. The installer seems to work fine when I don't ask it to connect to the Internet.

Any help would be highly appreciated!
Thanks for your time, kind regards from
Idar

I'm not exactly sure what is going on in your case, but I do know that tvtrnr3_1027tr_2_.xml is for ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery. If Software Installer is trying to download ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery, that file is over 200Mb! The tvtrnr3_1027tr_2_.xml is not large, its the .exe file that is large.

Or if the installer detects the setup.exe for R&R on your hard drive you should know that it takes a while for the installation to take effect.

hi there

Well, it always hangs when looking at the xml-file, so it should not have tried to download the Rescue & Recovery at that point. I will try to download it manually instead and see if it helps though.

However, the Software Installer crashes, and windows forces it to close, so I don't think it's trying to download the whole R&R. If so, I would expect it to just take some time (not very long, as I have a 100Mbit internetconnection).

I also tried a full factory reset today, but I still get the exact same result. That should allow me to blame IBM/Lenovo for the fault, hehe :)
Could the whole problem be a faulty xml-file? Maybe that could make the whole SI crash?

Well, I'll try to install the newest Rescue&Recovery, after that it'll be Lenovo support I guess. Does anyone know how to search the IBM webpage for faults like these? I try to navigate their pages, but I only find the supportpages extremely frustrating....

Thanks for the help, I'll keep you updated if I find out the cause.

Kind regards,
Idar

I hate their search feature too. It helps somewhat, if after you type in several key terms in the box, click Search, then click on Advanced search, and choose "all of the words" or else "the exact phrase". I sure don't know why it defaults to "any of the words". Who is going to sift through over 100,000 hits? :?

Sometimes you can use Google to search IBM. Use Google's advanced feature, and after typing in the several key terms in the box, type in ibm.com or lenovo.com in the "return results from the site or domain" box, then click the Google Search button.

I have now tried to manually install the new Rescue & Recovery, which is far better than the old one by the way, but the Software Installer still crashes at the exact same point.

I also tried to let the laptop stay on over night to see if it tried to download anything, but it made no difference either.

Browsing through IBM's pages for R&R http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... TVAN-RNRLE, it looks like it's looking for the Traditional Chinese predesktop language pack and crashes there.

Well, well, I've sorta' given up on this thing, and have sent a mail to IBM support. Looks like i'll try the "sit and wait" method others have tried, and wait until Lenovo updates their software again.

Anyways, thanks for the responses and suggestions,
Idar

You might try uninstalling Software Installer by going to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Reboot then download and install Software Installer from THIS SITE.

Perhaps the site you got Software Installer from is causing your problems. Most of us are not having the problems you describe.

new version (build 510) is available for download via SI. It fixed that problem for me. Good luck!
