Any experience with thinkpadworld?

#1 Post by forika » Sun Oct 02, 2005 1:41 pm

I've narrowed it down to a T(41/42/43)p, depending on what kind of deal I can find. I've been looking at an ebay seller "thinkpadworld" over the last several weeks. Most of what they list is not new but "factory recertified". However, they usually include a very nice warranty. According to their feedback they seem to do a good amount of business and have a lot of satisfied customers. They say their an "authorized IBM business partner and service center", not sure what this means, but they seem legit. I was just wondering if anyone here has had any experience with these guys.

Good question, and I'm interested in feedback too. I had been looking at their auctions myself over the past 2 weeks. But I decided to place an order with Lenovo directly (now cancelled). Then on Sunday I just found a T42P on eBay that was souped up significantly and about the same price as the student discount I was getting from Lenovo directly. So I'm waiting for that one to arrive later this week (hopefully).

"authorized IBM business partner and service center" means they brought recertified tp from IBM by a low price and resell it.
Just image wal-mart.

I am in a similar situation, from what I have seen they appear to be legit. If they are a power seller, with good feedback (which they are), I feel you shouldn't have a problem. I will probably be making a purchase from them fairly soon myself (T41p).

How does an individual buy recertified systems from Lenovo at a cheap price. If thinkpadworld can do it, why cant we? Lenovo likes selling direct anyway ..... especially if we could get nice discounts :)

That's a good question ddutta. I know certain walk-in stores by my house (in the LA area) have plenty of refurbished/recertified notebooks each time I'm there. No Thinkpads, unfortunately. If anybody has some insight on purchasing recerts directly from Leveno, please post.

Check the Lenovo/IBM site, certified used section, I assume this is what you are talking about? I just bought a T30 Certified Used and it is in great condition, there is other posts on this board referencing some others experiences with the CUE purchase. I can only speak from my experience which has been good. Price for T30 was $775 US. Bought the INTEL from AbsoluteRaleigh wireless card $20, another 256M ram$44 from IBM, it has a new display, new keyboard, memory issue repaired, great second lappy!!

My T42 is getting much needed rest ZZZzzzzzz.....:)

I am not posting this with absolute certainty, but with past business experience that I have been involved in, unrelated to computers, you get discounts if you buy in bulk, also if you establish a relationship where you continuously make multiple purchases in bulk. And it appears that Thinkpad World does so. They post on Ebay that they have 30 T41p's. If you go to IBM (Lenovo) and tell them you want to purchase 30 refurbished T41p's, and you do this multiple times, maybe they will give you a discount.

About refurbished notebooks from IBM, I believe there are rating for each refurb machine. S, A, etc.

S is supposed to be the best, literally like an open box item where it is as good as brand new. I read somewhere about this.

I almost bought a T41p from them, then decided to buy a new one from another e-bayer, which had less RAM but 3 year IBM warranty. I was somewhat weary of the MACK warranty. I figured IBM warranty cannot be beat from my previous experiences.

I have not read about the different certifications for the used equipment but if you go to the IBM site and browse there are different warranties, 3 and 6 month durations, I have a year on mine. I have read many posts here from guys who bought them from various places on the net and I think if you get a warranty and do your homework to check them out you will be fine. There were a couple of shady characters on e-bay though. But usually if it sounds to good to be true....you know the rest.
