161 & 163 are CMOS errors. You can replace the CMOS battery yourself, with a watch battery from Wal-Mart/Radio Shack, if you feel like taking the time. Or you can pick up a replacement CMOS battery (with connectors) off of eBay ($10-20).

If you need to know how to do it, post again, or check the Hardware Maintenance Manual: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... WIK-3SYPX2

You don't need the main battery pack. What you need is the backup (also called CMOS) battery. This is a coin cell with 2 wires and a plug attached. The coin cell is common, but you do not want to solder any wires to one, as the battery may explode!

The part is: Backup Battery 02K6502. This is from the IBM Hardware Maintenance Manual (which also shows location and parts removal procedures). You can search on pricegrabber.com or Google to find a vendor. The price should be around $15.

After you install the backup battery you need to press F1 at the beginning of the boot sequence to get into the BIOS EZ Setup, to set the date and time.
