Extended service is warranty added beyond what comes with the machine normally. Some models are 1 year, some are 3 years but all can be extended for up to 5 years if you want to pay the price.

Warranty service upgrade is just that. All warrantys that come with the notebooks are a mail-in depot warranty. You need warranty repairs, IBM
sends you a box, you ship it to their repair depot, they fix it and return it.
The upgrade would be onsite service. Technician comes to your house/office and fixes it there.

Thinkpad Protection is basically insurance. You drop it, spill something on it, accidently crack the display, whatever, it will be fixed or replaced no questions asked. Highly recommended for mobile users who will keep the unit for 3 years.

As mentioned in other topics, with the International Warranty Service registration, you can use the extended warranty in most countries.
