Battery capacity...

#1 Post by lshift2005 » Mon Oct 03, 2005 10:44 am

I just bought a T43, and the battery capacity was around 51wh.
but after charging 3 times, the 'full charge capacity' becomes 48.88wh now...why is that? is there a problem of my battery or it is normal?
thanks!...

Hi, this is quite normal... your tp has adjusted the battery capacity indicator after a few charge/discharge cycles. As ong as you don't keep on loosing capacity at this same rate, it will be fine. This batteries have a design capacity close to 50WH, with some individual variance, so yours still look good and well under acceptable specs.

Note that batteries tend to loose capacity as they age... but to give you an indication, it normally takes 200+ discharge cycles to get close to 50% of its design capacity. Mine, for instance is now 47.89 wh after 15 cycles.

FWIW, on my T42, design capacity is 47.52 and current capacity is 42.48. This is after 19 cycles and 8-months of use.

Same 6 cell battery as the prior two posts (47.5 Wh design capacity) and now down to 32 Wh current capacity after 22 months. Time for a new battery soon. ... JD Hurst

Don't you guys ever unplug the notebook? My cycle count reads 9 for the 10 or so days that I've had my T42 and 12 for the 15 days that I've had my T43.
The funny thing is that the design capacity of the battery attached to my T42 reads 47.52 while the full charge capacity is 48.94. :?

Why unplug if power is available where you use your laptop. I have owned my T43p for a while now and only have 2 cycle counts. There are times I do need to "go mobile" but seldom.

I support Greg here. I do tote my machine a lot, but plenty of times I am able to plug it in where I need to use it.

Hmm...a cycle count of 2 roughly equates to the fact that you've unplugged your notebook on just two occasions?!? :?

Huh! Where did you get that idea?

I don't know exactly how the "cycle count" increments, but it is definitely not directly related to the number of off-external-power operational sessions. I use my T41 off power fairly frequently for shortish periods (under 1 hour) and the cycle count increments much more slowly than the number of times I run off battery power!

Bill

Does that means discharges below a 85% charge indication, or discharges below a 15% charge indication?

I believe this means that the software keeps a cumulative record of how much your battery is discharged when in use. For example, if your battery discharges one time 22%, another 45%, another 10%, and another 14%, that is a cumulative discharge of 91%. So in this case you have gone through one battery cycle (of 85%). Note that this is just my belief. I have not actually read this anywhere.

A Li ion battery charged

#23 Post by amitra » Wed Jan 11, 2006 5:02 am

The lithium ion cells have a deterioration rate of 20% of the current capacity per annum if kept 100% charged (plugged in).
Lets say we start with a 100AH battery. After 12 months its capacity would be 100-20 = 80AH, even though cycle count = 0 in that period.
After 12 more months it would be 80-16 = 64 AH and so on.

But if your battery is kept 40% charged only then you dont lose more than 5% per Annum. That's why there is an option in the Power manager wher you can set your limits.

Hi All,

I have had my T42 laptop now for approximately 13 months. Of late, my 6 cell battery seems to be showing some unususal behavior.

The current full charge capacity is 25.12 Wh (152 cycle counts). This morning when the full charge capacity was 29.35 Wh and the battery health color was Yellow, I decided to "Improve Battery Health" and hit the button. After going through the process, the color has changed to Red and the full charge capacity has reduced to 25.12!! What is going on? Shouldn't it be the other way around? How much longer do I have if the battery is in this condition? Please advise.

Btw, this is the first time I used this function.

best regards,
Ranjit

If someone doesn't mind me asking a dumb question, where can I find cycle counts, remaining charge, etc. about my battery on the system?

I don't wish to sound too harsh, but it is found in the tools people want to get rid of. If you have a functioning pre-load (I do) it is in ThinkPad config under system information. .. JD Hurst
