Does anyone know where you can purchase Dothan processors? Preferably 2ghz. Also does it void the warranty if you change the processor of your Thinkpad?
One more thing, if you have a 1.7ghz Banias Core, and you upgrade to a 2ghz Dothan, would you need to also upgrade the fan?
This is referring to a T41p.
Thanks,
Daniel

I have found where I can purchase a 2ghz for $319. Does upgrading the cpu yourself void the warranty?
Also, is it likely that these processor will go down in price? I am assuming since these are an old generation, they will be eventually be discontinued from production, which would possibly increase the price, since they would become more rare. Is this a correct assumption? I have never followed cpu prices, so I am not sure how the pricing goes.

This is my guess but I think the price of Dothan processors that are 2+ Ghz will not go down as quickly as we would like to. This is because I am sure there will be plenty of demand from those who will upgrade or replace their Banias core since the upgrade is simple swap.
I do not plan to upgrade for about 2 years or more. I am sure 1.7GHz Banias will serve me well w/o for another two or more years.
EDIT: Also since the processors are not coming out as quickly they used to the price for them will likely to stay high for a while.

There was an intel price refresh 1-2 months back so the next time the prices will drop is Q1-06. Also, the older procs drop by 10-20% .... I guess the 2.13 will drop to 2.0 prices and the 2.0 will drop to 1.86 prices .... which means ~$250 for 2.0 .... I wouldnt wait if I needed a higher speeds. And vice versa!
