Couldn't wake up from Suspend! Why?

#1 Post by jlingo » Wed Oct 05, 2005 8:30 pm

I was just wondering, I have been doing suspend successfully for the past two days, and this morning, my computer couldn't wake up from suspend. I had to turn off the computer and reboot fresh! Do you guys know what might possibly cause the problem?

A while ago, yes updated ATI driver from Windows update and I couldn't suspend anymore. I have rectified the problem. It has been fine waking up from suspend past few days. it's just this morning, it didn't want to wake up from suspend. I had to turned off the laptop and restarted it from Fresh.
So I was just wondering what might cause the problem. I have been doing suspend for the past 2 days without shutting down the computer at all. I'm trying to do a full week without restarting the computer if possible.

I don't know if this will help, but on my 600E I sometimes had to hold down the Fn key for a few seconds, or press it 2-3 times to bring the laptop out of suspend. I really haven't noticed this on my T42 though.

It just happened to me again few minutes ago. But I heard the harddrive sound and the fan turned on, it's just the screen is blank. I waited while pressing Fn-F4, Enter, Fn-F3, keyboard, after almost 30sec to 1 minute, the monitor turned on. May be there are occasion where I have to wait for 1 minute to fully wake up from suspend? I will have to try this next time.

To bring the laptop out of Standby I pressed the Fn key alone. No key combinations.

The Suspend problem just happened again on me. I pressed Fn key alone, and then the harddrive sound, the fan sound came on, and then after 45sec, the bluetooth light lit on, and the power light was on also. But the screen was still blank. I was unable to wake it. Then I closed the lid, it went back to suspend. and then I opened the lid back, and it's finally resumed, and monitor turned on, then, I can actually log in with no problems. Successfully using the computer, Hmmm.

It's possible you are having problems with the switch that is controlled by the opening and closing of the lid. I don't know which model of ThinkPad you have, but on the T42 it is very close to the left hinge. There is a little protruberance on the lid that pushes on the switch in the base, when you close the lid.

Try leaving the lid open and going into Standby by pressing the Fn + F4 keys. Then later, with the lid still open, press the Fn key to bring out of standby. If this consistantly works, that would seem to indicate this switch may be causing your problem. I've read of a few users having trouble with this switch.

This happend to me once, what it turned out to be (for me) was the power settings, it was set to go into standy after 20 mins and hibernate after 25mins, it went from standby to hibernate so pushing the function key was useless I had to push the power button. :)

I think I might have solved the problem by switching back my 7200RPM 60GB Hitachi HDD, into factory default 80GB 5400rpm harddrive.
I guess the error 2010 causes problem with suspend and resume function in my case.
