Thinkpad T20 - Travelstar 40gb internal hard drive - crashes

#1 Post by cyberfilmmaker » Thu Oct 06, 2005 5:05 am

Hi,

I have installed a TRAVELSTAR 40gb hard drive into my Thinkpad T20.

Windows XP PRO worked fine in the beginning but after a crash and emergency power off I am not able to install and run Windows XP.

Installation is fine. But at a later stage when I try to boot with my hrddrive I get the AN READ DISK ERROR has occurred.

I did a NFT formatting and disk scan in advance. No bad sectors were found.

Is this a Thinkpad series problem or is my drive simply faulty.

Is a BIOS update needed?

Many thanks for sharing your wisdom.

All the best.

You do have the CD Drive selected as the first item in the boot order, right? Just selecting it at startup won't work becasue it needs to boot from CD a couple times during install

Download PC Doctor from the support site and use the "Full Erase HDD" function - Formatting won't clean out everything.

If that doesn't get it, the drive may be bad.

Hi EGibbs,

many thanks for your reply.

Yes I had the CD DRIVE
selected and I believe the installation was complete.

I shall try it again. Thanks for the PC DOCTOR tip.I have never used it.

The strange thing is that I can still use this drive as an external USB storage drive and write/read files to it.

All the best,
CF

Maybye something wrong with boot sector. Try to fix it from WinXP install CD in console mode: FIXBOOT and FIXMBR
