is fan problem solved in T42?

#1 Post by miaskiew » Fri Jul 02, 2004 9:03 pm

Hi, I am a new user on this forum, and I think you could help me a lot with my computer choice:

I have a chance to get a T42 through a good deal IBM has with my university. I am a humanities student and I only use non-intensive applications (+ watch DVDs or listen to music), so I'm not so big on power, but ergonomics is very important to me: keyboard, screen, and noise level.

So I've been rather put off by the discussion that has been going on about the infamous "cycling noise" from the fan that some users have been bothered by. Observing my experience with computers, I am sure I would also be in the category of people who'd be very annoyed by it if it happened.

So do you know if the problem has been fixed in the T42s?

I should add that the model I am considering is not a standard model sold on the website, but is only offered to my university. Its symbol is 2373-H12 and if you search ibm.com for it, you'll get a result that tells you it is "based on 2373-1WU."
So it has: P M 1.5 GHz
512 MB RAM
40 GB 5400 rpm HDD
14.1 " XGA
32 MB ATI Radeon 7500
Intel 802.11 b wireless

By what you can tell, thinkpad enthusiasts you have given such maginificently detailed info on the fan problem elsewhere, is this model likely to suffer from the fan problem?
From what I can tell myself: because it has ATI Radeon 7500 it should have the "14 '' short fan" (the parts list also seems to be saying this) - so this was quoted on this forum as the noisy fan. Bad news.
But then it is sold with the T42 label, so perhaps, as some say, it will have the problem solved because it is a T42? Good news?

I'd be very grateful if you could help me with this anxiety I have.

PS. Also, some people have been reporting clicking noise from their T sereis harddrive (blaming it on the Hitachi technology if I remember correctly). Is this model likely to have this problem?

I have the T42 FVU

I don't get the fan cycling problem, and the clicking noise went away

That machine is a T42? I thought they were only the Dothan chips? (min 1.7ghz?)
