T40 XGA LCD quality question

#1 Post by Otter » Fri Oct 07, 2005 5:59 pm

I'm looking for a cheaper laptop, and I'm looking on Ebay.

Is the XGA screen on the T40 any good?

Am I better of with an R51 SXGA?

I want a light powerful laptop, but I don't want a crappy screen.

It's easy to go down to Staples to see an awesome looking HP or Sony screen, but I don't have any IBMs around to compare it to.

The XGA display is good enough for business use, but in terms of brightness and viewing angle, it sucks.

Beware of the glossy screens if you want to get work done. They look great at first and have really good contrast, but they also have a lot of glare and can lead to eyestrain fairly quickly.

I personally like the FlexView SXGA+ and UXGA panels in the T4xp machines. They have good brightness, excellent viewing angle, and much better color reproduction than the standard XGA panel.

I agree with the glare thing. I know people who only work on certain LCD's because of that. It gives some people headaches. I've personaly found it does bother my eyes a bit.

the SXGA displays are nice, even non-FlexView. I don't think there's much glare. The XGA's I've seen do have some glare. Not sure how much they vary along different manufacturers.
