IBM THINKPAD R31 GRAPHICS CARD. HOW TO GET IT TO 32MB?????

#1 Post by Laptop_wizard » Mon Oct 10, 2005 10:26 am

Hey Guys.
I have a Thinkpad R31 P3 1.13GHz 30GB HDD 768MB ram.

I saw on the discription that the R31 has "up to" 32MB of video memory.
What is the whole deal on this, I think it usally uses 8MB. How do you get it to use the full 32MB?
any information on this would be great.

Thankyou so much for your help and time in advance.

The video memory is not upgradable. it is part of the system board and it is fixed.
When they say "up to", some models come with video cards with 32MB and some with less or more.

The only way to upgrade video memory is to replace the system board.

In this case, I believe he is talking about system shared memory. In that case, the system allocates enough memory from RAM to the graphics card depending on the application. Therefore, you will probably not use the 32MB unless when playing games, where the system should allocate it automatically.

Yeah he's right, my system has 32MB video memory, I was just wondering when it would use the full 32MB or if there was some sort of BIOS setting I had to alter. My R31 is on it;s way, but i haven't gptten it yet, I kneed it for my computer repair business.
Thanks guys

As stgreek said, it'll be allocated as it's needed. The graphics driver will automatically take RAM whenever it needs it. So, you'll only use about 4MB when you're just sitting at a desktop, but when you're playing a game, it'll take the full 32MB. It automatically releases it back to Windows once it's done, as well.
