What happens if I drop the lid and forget about my machine and the battery dies while it's in standby? I have an R51 running WinXP Pro; would it act more or less like I'd just turned off the power while it was running? I'm curious, but not so much that I'm willing to try it.
My old TP600E w/Win98SE had an option to go from standby to hibernate after a period of time, but there's no such option now. It seems like a useful feature; why'd they remove it?
What if battery goes dead while in standby?

The hibernate option only appears if you enable hibernate in power options.
I don't know if this is by default or only happens if you have hibernate enabled, but in standby mode, just before the battery runs out, the computer would wake up and put itself into hibernate mode. I don't know if hibernate needs to be enabled for this to work, since ThinkPads appear to be able to hibernate (Fn-F12) even if hibernate is disabled.

Right click on an open area of the display and choose: Properties > Screen Saver > Power... > Hibernate, to enable Hibernation. While in the Power Options Properties dialog box, choose tab 'Alarms', then button 'Alarm Action...' to set Hibernate when battery power level reaches the setpoint.FRiC wrote:The hibernate option only appears if you enable hibernate in power options.
