Can I replace my palm rest with one with fingerprint reader?

#1 Post by Sci-Clone » Tue Oct 11, 2005 10:15 pm

I have a T42p 2373-GVU and its getting serviced right now. If all goes well I'll have a new system board on it soon. When I called IBM to ask about the system board they said that the one that is currently on my system is discontinued and it was replaced by a new model( thus different FRU). I was guessing that one of the differences was the finger print reader. Since it is a input device it needs to be conencted to the systemboard and when I bought mine the print reader didnt exists. So if my assumption is right and there is gonna be a fingerprint reader input conenctor on the motherboard I should be able to buy a palmrest with a fingerprint reader. Am I correct? Please feel free to bash on my logic :)

Tell them to change the palmrest as well. If the new systemboard comes with finger print reader may be they will be nice enough to do it for you.

Mostly likely you will get the same motherboard with a different FRU number ( the now equivalent of 93P4159 which might start with 27R...)

The connector is the same on the finger print and non finger print, the finger print reader runs into the mouse pad, which then connects to the MB, the UPEK chip on the motherboard makes the difference. So unless you get lucky and they are willing to change the type of motherboard, I wouldn't bother requesting the palm rest change.

Sorry if it sounds disappointing but thats the way things are.

Is it possible to add a fingerprint scanner after purchasing a t43 without one?

yeah on a t43 it seems possible because they seem to use only one type of motherboard for both fingerprint and non FP models.

there are two major type of motherboards for t42 one without fingerprint support and second with it. (I'm not talking about other variation for VRAM) if they put this newer motherboard w/ FPR support then yes you can .

Here is list since I don't know what part they are putting in

T41
93P3313 -> T41 128 MB

T42
93P4156 M7 -32
93P4157 M9 - 64
93P4158 M10 -64
93P4159 M10 GL 128 -> this for your Laptop's correct FRU

27K9907 ATI M10 -32MB
27K9908 ATI M10 - 64 MB
27K9909 ATI M10- 128 MB -> they might have put this one

27k9910 ATI M7 -32
27k9911 ATI M10 -64
27K9912 ATI M10 128 -> this with fingerprint sensor.

if they have replaced your motherboard with 27K9912, then you can buy a fingerprint reader and place in your system. for this you will need FRU #91P8684 Palm rest assembly with Fingerprint reader and Ultrabay guide rail assembly for 14in Model with Fingerprint reader FRU#91P8682

and also you have to buy fingerprint reader too.

hope this helps you.

How does one go about this? Oh, and thanks for the USB scanner links, but I'd like one physically attached to the pc, not via USB.

I'm imagining I need the module and a new plastic cover, is that it?

Funny, I would have prefered for my T42 not to have the finger print reader.
Just taking up space, and I can never get it to work properly.

Wait a min guyz NOT all T42 Motherboards have fingerprint sensor. Only following system boards have sensor.

27k9910 ATI M7 -32
27k9911 ATI M10 -64
27K9912 ATI M10 128

to Install FPR you will need a Palmrest for 14 in models FRU #91P8684 (Palmrest assembly with Fingerprint reader)
you will need to chnage Ultrabay guide rail assembly, for 14in Model FRU#91P8682

Calm down Buddy, They will replace it again call their number and tell them that you had a 128 MB Graphics chip and when they serviced the laptop they put other FRU# which is with 64 MB Graphics chip.

They are supposed to put exact same configuration they should put one of the following

93P4159 M10 GL 128 -> this for your Laptop's correct FRU
27K9909 ATI M10- 128 MB -> they might have put this one
27K9912 ATI M10 128 -> this with fingerprint sensor.

if not 27K9912 then they should put 27K9909. Ask them to look into replacement FRU List. what is backup FRU number for your systemboard.

you can go to Same repair center or talk to IBM customer service and send it to Depot.

for my knowledge was your laptop came with 128 MB or it was 64 MB. ... this question can be stupid because Laptop configuration for your model shows 128 MB, and there is no reason except a mistake they would put a 64 MB Board.
