Adding an HD in Ultrabay of X21 ?

#1 Post by GpsPasSion » Wed Oct 12, 2005 8:57 am

Looking at getting an X21 as a backup for my X31 but just realized it had no USB2 or Firewire, so not easy to move files around from my 2.5DD, is it possible to put it in the Ultrabay with an adaptor to get a good transfer speed ?

I think you can do that. I know for a fact it works with the X24. What I do is use the Ultrabase X2, and put an Ultrabay 2nd Hard Drive Adapter there.
Works really well.

I know it's supported on the X21...

I've never tried it though, seeing as my only other working 2.5" HDD is a mere 810MB.

Good to know that. Where did that HD come from? I'm curious, it must be an old computer.

I just realized the original poster and I joined the forum the exact same day.

It's a 2.5" 9.5mm (so it's even the right size!) 810MB Toshiba drive.

It's from a Toshiba Satellite Pro 405CS. Pentium 75, 16MB RAM, 10.4" 640x480x16-bit display, Win95 OSR2. My first exposure to pointing sticks.

IIRC, it's 4200RPM, but I'm not sure.

Blast from the past. My wife bought a Toshiba Satellite 335CDS if I remember correctly about 6 years ago. It was a Pentium II with a 800x600 screen. Her stepfather has it now. Everytime I see it and I compare it to my T42 I smile. Those things were thick!

Thanks for the replies, good news! I guess the question is whether that adapter is easy to come by, I take it is not the same as the CD/DVD one ? Also what kind of speed can one expect ?

You want the UltraBay 2000 HDD Adaptor (that may not be the actual name, but UltraBay 2000 is what you want).

BTW, I'm estimating that my Toshiba weighed around seven pounds...

It's a full 2" thick.

having given it some thought, I wonder whether using a PCMCIA to USB2.0 cardbus adapter wouldn't be an easier (and more mobile) fix, anyone tried that on an X21 ?

Have you considered copying files over a network?

Well I have a wireless G network, so actual speed is not going to be better than USB1.

For the record I tried a PCMCIA to USB2 adapter and it's not working properly, it seems the PCMCIA slot of the X23 does not deliver enough power, the X31 one does though, oh well...
