T41 high-pitched whine sound at high speed CPU.

#1 Post by jhujb » Sun Jul 04, 2004 12:42 am

Hello all,

I have t41 thinkpad. When I set CPU speed at High from battery maximiser, there is high-pitched whine (sound like high frequency). However, it is not from the fan spinning because the I can hear the sound even when the fan stops. I believe the sound comes from CPU.

However, the speed at adaptive or slow does not make the noise. I am courious if it is normal condition.

Yes, its normal. My T41p makes this annoying sound, and so did my previous T41.

My T41 does the same when Norton Antivirus is installed.
Try uninstalling it and see if the sound is still there.

Mine doesn't make any sound or I'm not just aware of it...

BTW...

If I uninstalled the Norton Virus program...how do I reinstall just that program?
Thinkpad X60 (60GB, 2GB), X6 Ultrabase combo, iPod Video 60GB, Timbuk2 Laptop Sleeve, Logitech V270 BT, in a TUMI Small Expandable Brief...

The Norton Antivirus installation files should be located in C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS\NORTONAV

BTW, i said that my T41 made the sound when Norton AV is installed, well it does but only when i open the messenger main window or internet explorer, might also make the sound when starting other internet related programs, but again only when Norton AV is installed and running (strange).

just a suggestion, but try changing your power adapter.

I had this problem when I got my T41p. When running off AC only, I would get the high pitched whine, most noticable when using the hd or usb mouse.

I went through the problem with an IBM support rep who put it down to being a faulty laptop and suggested I return the unit.

About two weeks later my power adapter died. I'm in Ireland, but I got the laptop in the US, so due to shipping charges etc, I decided it wouldnt be worth it to return it. Instead I used an adapter from my old 600x which not only powers my T41 (it's a bit slower charging when the cpu is loaded), but also by chance cured my buzzing problem.

I have the same problem on my T41, I bought an other IBM AC and the problem is the same, I don't think that the laptop is faulty because if you have the AC only (without the laptop) you can hear the buzzing.
