#1 Post by mio75 » Thu Oct 13, 2005 2:18 pm

Hi,

have anybody tried the new Hitachi HTS721010G9AT00 100G 7200 in the problemous T43 ?!
Is it possible to buy an off-the-shelf hdd and make it work without Error 2010??

Thanks,
Mikkel

I tried an off the shelf 100gb 7K100 in a T43 and got the infamous 2010 error message. hopefully Lenovo will release a firmware update in the near future.

After reading the link kyrotech provided, I wouldn't be holding my breath. It seems the 2010 message is not something to be fixed, but is by design. :o

EDIT: This regards a BIOS update. A hard drive firmware update can fix the problem, but I don't see IBM/Lenovo offering hard drive firmware updates for hard drives they don't sell. Maybe I'm wrong.

Well, the T43p Q2U comes with the 7k100 100G, so I bet IBM/Lenovo has a solution.

One idea would be to read out the firmware of 7k100 100G which comes with the Q2U, and apply it to off-the-shelf 7k100 100G disks.

Since 7k100 100G has not been released officially yet, I don't think IBM/Lenovo will provide the firmware update until that day. Hope I am wrong.
Current: T43P-2687D5U: P-M 2G, 2G RAM, FireGL V3200 128M, 80G 5400 RPM(Will be 100G 7K100 when 2010 gone!), 15' UXGA, Multi Burner, Intel A/B/G, Bluetooth, 9 Cell, Fingerprint Reader, WinXP Pro
Previous: 390E, 600E, T23, X30, T40 ......

I've purchased two of these drives in the past week - both were manufactured in September 2005. they have been released and they are EXTREMELY fast, but the 2010 error message on the T43 is extremely annoying.

What I mean is they are not widely available. What I am interested in is the T43p models using 7k100.

The only thing that holds me buying it now is this 2010 warning ......

IBM just released version 11 of the firmware update which adds support for the Hitachi 5K100, so I am hopeful that the 7K100 will eventually be included as well:
http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... 08#changes

the big question is whether any one has tried using IBM's firmware to flash the firmare on an after-market Hitachi drive without jumping through major obstacles (as some users did when flashing non-IBM 7K60 drives)

hoya, did you notice any impact of this error message for windows xp?

I ran Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test and everything seems fine in XP, but I would feel much better if the error message were gone. I also wish I could get a straight answer out of Hitachi and/or Lenovo. the technical person I spoke with at Hitachi said they don't know of any problems with any of their drives working on the T43/p, but he said Hitachi will NOT be releasing a firmware update. when I called Lenovo, they had no idea when the firmware update would be released.

I also saw a post on another thread to the effect that off-the-shelf Hitachi drives lack the ability to have their firmware updated, so I am very suspicious and extremely frustrated at this point. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

From Lenovo's site referenced above.
This error is purposely generated to alert the user to potential problems with diagnostic or copy tools. There are known issues with several of these listed below.

1. Disk Fitness Test (DFT) version 3.xx provided by Hitachi GST which uses vendor specific commands on the hard drive. These may not be correctly interpreted since they must pass through the serial to parallel ATA bridge. However, version 4.00 or later of the Disk Fitness Test (DFT) will work.
2. HDDTEST version 0.28 by Hitachi GST does not function properly for similar reasons. Instead, use HDDTEST version 0.29 or later.
3. DOS-based copy tools may function slowly or produce incorrect output, specifically previous versions of Norton/Symantec Ghost. These versions are not compatible with the Serial-ATA interface of the Intel ICH6M chip set. Documentation on this problem may be found at www.symantec.com. It is recommended to use either a newer version of Ghost, Norton Ghost 2003 (version 2003.789 or later) or Symantec Ghost 8.0 or later, or to use the -FNI switch when invoking Ghost from the command prompt (For example, Ghost.exe -FNI with the current version of Ghost).

Other disk copy tools and related applications, such as some backup programs, may also have similar behavior.

The hard drives shipped in the affected systems will not display the message because they already have firmware that recognizes this new Serial ATA bridge chip. However, a similar drive from an earlier ThinkPad system or an OEM drive might cause the error message to be displayed. Customers may also notice the POST error message after applying a ThinkPad BIOS update if a drive without the firmware update is installed in the system. Some early systems were shipped with a system BIOS version that did not provide this POST error message. Updated BIOS has been released to provide this informative POST error message to users.

acronis true image works just fine on the 100gig..

it is my habit to pull the drive that comes with the thinpad i personally use after loading true image and making a copy...

i have done this on the T42p Q2U and all is fine..
except for the annoying 2010 error message..
which does not seem to do more than just annoy..

when there is a firmware update, i'll try it on the aftermarket 100gig and see if it works..

if i could copy the firmware image from the thinkpad option 100gig and apply it to the non-thinkpad option drive i would but, alas, no tools to do this..

if anyone finds a workaround, let me know.. :)

Do you know if acronis works with the T43? Will it have a problem with the PATA->SATA bridge? Has anyone successfully used it with a USB drive on the T43?
