Get

#1 Post by Billo » Sat Oct 15, 2005 12:47 am

Just got an X41 TabletPC. The machine was bought in Santiago Chile, so it came with a latinamerican keyboard (which I wanted) but with the spanish version of the OS (which I did not). I would like to get the English version of the preinstalled software (OS and Utilities), but so far IBM local guys haven't been helpful, nor does the IBM or Lenovo site provide any insight on how should I proceed.

Anyone out there knows how can I get an image of the original partition that comes with the English version of the machine?

You have to get an english version of the Recovery Disc set. I believe you can buy it from IBM/Lenovo for about $50 US. You may find it on e-bay.

Your version of Windows cannot be upgraded - it has to be replaced. I looked into this several months ago. Following is what I discovered.

A localized language version of a Windows–based client cannot be upgraded to a different language version of Windows XP Professional, or to the Windows XP Professional MUI Pack. For example, you cannot upgrade a Japanese localized language version of Windows 2000 Professional to either the International English language version or MUI Pack of Windows XP Professional.

Important

To replace any other language versions of Windows with the Windows XP Professional MUI Pack, you must remove the previous Windows version and perform a clean installation of the Windows XP Professional MUI Pack.
You can only upgrade to the Windows XP Professional MUI Pack from an International English language version of Windows, or from the Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional MultiLanguage Version. Table 3.5 shows which of these earlier versions of Windows clients can be upgraded to the Windows XP Professional MUI Pack.

Actually, technically speaking, you'd have to buy a US English copy of Windows XP. Since you got a Spanish version of the OS preloaded on the system, that's all your licensed for. It'd be a voilation of the license agreement with MS for them to send you an English recovery cd set (even if you pay $50).
