T43 clock--late

#1 Post by Filip » Sat Oct 15, 2005 5:08 am

I synchronized date & time in winxp with time.windows.com on 08th of October.
And today... I realized that my clock was about 18 seconds late in only 7 days. How? It is too much...
Or time.windows.com is wrong

Entirely common. Computers are not meant to be chonographs. I haven't owned one yet that kept accurate time.

WinXP defaults to synchronizing date/time once per week. You can change that interval to whatever you want with the registry tweak found at http://www.dslreports.com/faq/3844. Also, time.windows.com has been known to occasionally be off by a significant amount. You can be assured of consistently accurate time by decreasing the update interval and using one of the OpenAccess Stratum Two Time Servers listed at http://ntp.isc.org/bin/view/Servers/Str ... imeServers instead of time.windows.com. Just find one that's nearby and substitute its HostName for time.windows.com in the Internet Time tab of the Date and Time Properties in Control Panel.

I update with the NIST server. Mine is even worse: on somedays, I notice that it is off by about 10 minutes!

Come on! 18 seconds in a week is a MESS!
My Swiss made watch makes it 2.5-3 seconds in a month and I consider it as a issue...
Let's be real, computers aren't made as a cronograph, but this is too much.

So just how much more you would personally be prepared to pay for a laptop that kept better time than your Swiss watch?

Cheers,

Bill

Could I humbly suggest downgrading your Thinkpad to this?I gurantee that it will keep better time.

If you like, you can mail me your Thinkpad and I will mail one out to you ASAP
